As a long-time fan of animated sitcoms and someone who has spent countless hours binge-watching shows like “The Simpsons” and “South Park”, I must admit that I am genuinely excited about Glen Powell’s latest venture into voice acting for the upcoming “Family Guy” Halloween special.
It feels like I can’t escape the captivating charm of Glen Powell these days! Whether it’s gracing Netflix with his presence in movies like “Hit-Man” or sharing the screen with Sydney Sweeney in romantic comedies such as “Anyone But You”, he never fails to impress. Now, Powell is venturing into a fresh territory – voice acting. In a sneak peek at the upcoming Halloween special of “Family Guy”, streaming exclusively on Hulu, we get a glimpse of his new role, and it seems to align with many characters he’s portrayed before.
The special features numerous nods to well-known movies and pop culture events, as demonstrated by its opening scene that mimics a Spirit Halloween store, a popular subject for comedy recently. Powell’s character doesn’t make an appearance until later in the trailer, with only a jab at Joe for finishing second in a pumpkin carving contest being shown.
The Halloween special marks a 25-year milestone for the popular series “Family Guy,” which premieres on Hulu on October 14th. Although Powell is a major draw for this special, there’s plenty more to excite long-term fans of the show. Some beloved side characters step into the spotlight, and even those who haven’t spoken much before get their moments in the sun.
Expect More Surprises in Family Guy’s Halloween special
In an interview with Screen Rant, the creators of “Family Guy,” Rich Appel and Alec Sulkin shared that Stewie’s teddy bear Rupert will be given his own storyline. According to Sulkin, there’s a plot twist similar to the movie “Single White Female” where Rupert may express an intense possessiveness towards Stewie, saying something like, “If I can’t have you, no one can.” This alludes to the 1992 film in which a woman becomes dangerously obsessed with her roommate and tries to eliminate her from her life.
The renowned British classical actor Derek Jacobi lends his voice to the character Rupert. At first glance, this might seem an unusual choice for a teddy bear’s voice, but it was strategically planned from the start. According to Appel, “the concept of casting such a classically trained actor who naturally possesses that accent seemed fitting for Stewie’s companion.
In regards to how Powell landed the role, it appears quite straightforward. Appel described the character he portrays as arrogant, and jokingly stated to Screen Rant “who else could play an arrogant jerk?“, which seems fitting. It’s unlikely we’ll see much more of Powell, if any at all, after this special is over.
Fans of “Family Guy” can anticipate another festive episode coming up this year. In the spirit of Halloween, a Christmas special is set to premiere for the holiday season. Similar to the current one, this “Family Guy” Christmas special will be exclusively available on Hulu. With a history of great Christmas episodes, it’s likely that this special will also turn out well. Meanwhile, “Family Guy” continues to air on Fox. If you wish to watch older episodes online, you can find them streaming on Hulu.
