Gloria Calderón Kellett Leaves Amazon For Hyphenate Media Group, Nabs Celia Cruz Rights

¡Hola mi gente! As a fellow gamer (and self-proclaimed TV enthusiast), I am beyond excited about Gloria Calderón Kellett‘s latest move at Hyphenate Media Group! Her passion for storytelling, combined with her unique perspective as a Cuban-American, makes her an unstoppable force in the world of entertainment.

Gloria Calderón Kellett has moved her office to Hyphenate Media Group, co-owned by Cris Abrego and Eva Longoria, which grants her unique privileges to create TV shows and movies based on the Celia Cruz Estate’s intellectual properties.

The Hyphenate Media Group, established by two influential figures in Hollywood’s Latino community a year ago, has been actively seeking out talent like Calderón Kellett to collaborate with. Their initial investment in her GloNation production company marks the start of several strategic talent partnerships for Hyphenate. As a result, the versatile showrunner, producer, director, playwright, and actress will now create and produce content for them across various platforms.

Calderón Kellet expressed his excitement about the partnership with Cris, Eva, and Hyphenate Media Group in a statement. Throughout his career, he’s been involved in various overall deals with excellent companies, but none quite matched his aspirations. Instead of just producing content for one buyer, Calderón Kellet aims to create and distribute content that caters to multiple buyers, both independently and in collaboration. The resources provided by Hyphenate are expected to significantly boost GloNation’s growth at an unprecedented pace.

Longoria, a partner and creative head at Hyphenate, shared similar sentiments with THR regarding previous overall deals not aligning with her aspirations following the company’s launch in October last year.

It is reported that Calderón Kellett chose not to extend her latest overall contract with Amazon when it ended in 2023. During her time there, she introduced two shows: the romantic comedy “With Love” and the dark comedy “The Horrors of Dolores Roach.” Although she started with a substantial list of projects for development, Amazon only filmed the two series that ultimately had short runs.

From the moment Hyphenate was established, we’ve wanted to collaborate with Gloria due to her unique blend of emotion, wit, and relatability in her storytelling,” said Cris Abrego, CEO. “Our mission at our incubator aligns with this: fostering creator aspirations. We aim to assist Gloria in expanding GloNation into an independent content company that produces top-tier content across all genres, formats, and for every audience. She’s been collaborating closely with our team, who manage her business operations, while she dedicates her time to overseeing active projects and growing her content library.

Without a doubt, the slate being developed will feature projects centered around the iconic figure, Celia Cruz. GloNation is collaborating with Uncontained Media to create content about this legendary Cuban singer, affectionately known as the “Queen of Salsa.” This collaboration is in partnership with the Celia Cruz Estate, a deal that was facilitated by Hyphenate Media Group. Notably, Calderón Kellett, who is of Cuban-American descent, is involved in this project.

For over two decades, Gloria has been one of my closest friends,” Longoria stated, “and I’ve always trusted and advocated for her ideas and aspirations. Now that I have the opportunity to finance her enterprise and supply the resources needed for rapid expansion and influence, it holds great significance for me. She possesses a unique talent that spans generations, and I am excited to be traveling this path with her as a collaborator.

Before joining Amazon, Calderón Kellett worked as a co-executive producer with Mike Royce on the critically acclaimed modern adaptation of Norman Lear’s “One Day at a Time”. This multi-camera sitcom, similar to the original, was shot in front of a live audience and introduced a working class single mom scenario within a Cuban-American family living in Los Angeles. The main cast included Rita Moreno, Isabella Gomez, and frequent collaborator of Calderón Kellett, Justina Machado. In addition to this project, Calderón Kellett has also written for and produced other comedies such as “How I Met Your Mother”, “Rules of Engagement” and “Devious Maids”.

In March, the play “One of the Good Ones” by Calderón Kellett was first presented at the Pasadena Playhouse and received excellent feedback. Starting in 2025, it will be staged for a month in San Diego.

She is repped by UTA and Felker Toczek Suddleson.
