GLOW Ended Before Answering These Big Questions

As a die-hard fan of GLOW who has spent countless hours dissecting every episode and discussing theories with fellow enthusiasts, it’s truly heartbreaking to see the series cut short without getting those long-awaited answers. I remember the thrill of watching each new season unfold, marveling at the brilliant character development, and eagerly anticipating where the story would take us next.

The comedy-drama series titled “GLOW,” created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, initially aired on Netflix on June 23, 2017. This show centered around the lives and burgeoning wrestling careers of 15 women, with roots in the actual wrestling show, The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, which operated from 1986 to 1992. Although “GLOW” featured a strong ensemble cast of skilled and captivating actors, it was primarily Alison Brie’s character, Ruth Wilder, who took center stage. As the main character, Ruth offers the audience an insight into 1980s LA life, while also introducing us to the world of professional wrestling as the series unfolds.

Initially, Ruth faces challenges as an aspiring actress, attending one unsuccessful audition after another in search of her breakthrough role. When presented with a chance for steady income and regular work, she seizes it. This leads her to GLOW, or the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, auditions. Upon discovering the nature of this intriguing opportunity, she pours all her energy into mastering wrestling and catching the attention of the show’s creator, Sam Sylvia, in hopes of being selected for the program.

At the conclusion of the initial episode, she successfully attains her objective, albeit under one condition: Debbie Eagan, a previous soap opera star and friend, must also join the show. This arrangement not only initiates the wrestling series but also introduces one of the primary conflicts in the first season – the strained relationship between Ruth and her prosperous former companion, Debbie. As the first season unfolds, viewers follow along as these two women engage in confrontations both within and outside of the ring, get acquainted with the assortment of unconventional wrestlers, and eagerly anticipate that GLOW will thrive against all odds.

Who Were the Ladies of GLOW?

Besides Ruth and Debbie, the cast is teeming with intriguing characters that audiences grow to adore. Central figures also include Bash, the affluent show producer who financed its inception with his personal funds. Sam Sylvia, a past director of B-movie horrors attempting a comeback. Cherry Bang, a stuntperson whom Sam had collaborated with during his B-movie era. Justine Biagi, an unknown daughter to Sam. Lastly, Carmen Wade, a scion from a lineage of renowned wrestlers.

Over three exciting seasons, audiences grew fond of all these characters, including the eclectic band of female wrestlers. Many viewers developed favorites among them, eagerly returning each season to witness the evolutions of this unusual family and their wrestling spectacle. Although Ruth serves as the main character, the series is essentially a collaborative effort. The main storyline largely revolves around her and the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, but numerous wrestlers got their chance to shine in the limelight.

GLOW Was Canceled Abruptly

Despite the series’ widespread acclaim leading to its renewal for a fourth and concluding season, unexpected events unfolded due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. This necessitated repeated rescheduling of filming sessions for the fourth season. Ultimately, Netflix found themselves hemorrhaging funds as they continuously postponed production, so they opted to abandon the fourth season entirely, devastating fans who were left with unanswered questions about the show and its beloved characters.

At the conclusion of the third season, things were left hanging in the balance. Debbie opted to pursue a career behind the scenes, abandoning her acting role as Liberty Belle on GLOW and embarking on creating her own entertainment empire. She extended an invitation for Ruth to join her endeavor, but in the end, Ruth chose not to let go of her acting aspirations. Despite not having secured the major breakthrough she had longed for since the initial season, she remained unwilling to quit chasing it.

Currently thriving with my Vegas residency, GLOW finds itself in a delicate balance, much like a tightrope walker. The future of the wrestling series remained unclear, its next move shrouded in mystery. My dear friend Justine was endeavoring to make her debut film, but her failure to secure a role in that project had created a rift between us and Sam Sylvia. As for Bash, despite being married to Rhonda, he began to acknowledge aspects of himself he wasn’t quite prepared to confront or reveal.

What Questions Are Fans Still Left With?

With the sudden termination, numerous storylines were left unresolved, sparking curiosity among fans about the fate of their beloved characters. They wondered where the series might have headed had it been granted another season. Questions that linger include: Will Debbie manage to build her empire? Will GLOW persist, and if so, for how long? What would the evolution of this wrestling show entail? What fresh wrestling personas and characters might have emerged in the final chapter?

Could Justine’s film be a hit, paving the way for her directorial career and echoing her father’s path?

Regrettably, it seems we may never uncover the truth fully. Four years after the series ended, fans have been left with fragmented insights through occasional mentions in interviews with some cast members and scattered Instagram posts featuring set photos by a few actors. While there’s still optimism about a potential revival or disclosure of scripts for the fourth season from those involved, at this point, we’re largely in the dark.
