The primary appeal of the MonsterVerse films lies in witnessing massive Titans clash against each other. However, human characters serve an essential purpose by tethering the narratives. One such character was Dr. Nathan Lind, portrayed by Alexander Skarsgard in Godzilla vs. Kong, a movie available with a Max subscription. Unfortunately, Skarsgard’s role ended up being significantly reduced, but during his reflection on his time within the MonsterVerse, he articulated some interesting insights regarding this development.
Before his upcoming Apple TV+ series “Murderbot” hits screens next month, Skarsgard recently chatted with Empire (via Comicbook), and the topic of “Godzilla vs. Kong” arose. The actor clarified that his character, Nathan Lind, was initially intended to feature more in the fourth MonsterVerse film.
In the editing process, it appears that additional scenes focusing on character development and background information were removed from the final cut. However, when you take on a project like Godzilla versus Kong, you’ll find that there are only two main characters in the film, and unfortunately, you aren’t one of them.
Previously employed as a geologist at Monarch, Nathan Lind found himself involved in the storyline of “Godzilla vs. Kong.” Walter Simmons, CEO of Apex Cybernetics, called upon his expertise for a perilous journey into the Hollow Earth to locate a hidden energy source. Partnered primarily with Dr. Ilene Andrews, portrayed by Rebecca Hall, they successfully navigated through the tumultuous ordeal and survived. However, since then, no sign of Nathan has been seen, suggesting that he may not reappear in future installments.
Max is providing discounts up to 16% on its assortment of three annual plans, or alternatively, their most affordable plan commences at $9.99 per month. I would suggest considering Max as part of the package with Disney Plus and Hulu, priced from $16.99 monthly. However, once you subscribe to Max, you’ll have the opportunity to rewatch all five MonsterVerse films. Check out this offer!
As a movie enthusiast, I must admit, Alexander Skarsgård seems unfazed by the editing decisions made in “Godzilla vs. Kong.” He understands that audiences flocked to this film for the epic titan showdowns, and the unexpected alliance against Mechagodzilla was an exciting addition. It’s clear that Nathan Lind’s character served a purpose primarily for Godzilla and Kong, so if certain scenes need to be trimmed for a more impactful viewing experience, so be it.
Skarsgård also shared that his collaboration with director Adam Wingard was a creative journey, where they worked together to bring the best possible version of the film to the audience.
In a less formal context, the director Adam Wingard and I have the freedom to experiment with eccentric, humorous elements, and build rich character development. However, in the event of budget cuts, it’s Tom Hiddleston (Skarsgard) who might be reduced in screen time, rather than Godzilla or Kong. So, I understand the decision made, and yes, the movie functions well as is; it didn’t require more of Mr. Skarsgard.
To date, no character from the MonsterVerse movie series has starred in more than two films, though I hope that might change one day. For now, the focus remains on the Titans. If you’re seeking a compelling character-driven narrative within this universe, I suggest checking out the show “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” which is back for a second season and can be found on Apple TV+. It offers an engaging storyline where humans play an equally significant role alongside Godzilla and other Titans.
In the MonsterVerse film series, the upcoming sequel to “Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire” is underway. This movie, as of now untitled, features a star-studded cast including Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Stevens reprising his role as Trapper, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, Matthew Modine and Alycia Debnam-Carey. The film is directed by Grant Sputore and set to be released on March 26, 2027.
