‘Good Omens’ Final Season Will Be Just One Episode

As a die-hard fan of all things supernatural and a devoted follower of Neil Gaiman’s work, I must say this news about Good Omens has left me both intrigued and a tad worried. The idea of a feature-length finale is exciting, as it promises to wrap up the story in a grand manner, much like a epic novel’s climax. However, the absence of Gaiman in production feels like the author is stepping back from his pen, albeit temporarily.

The upcoming third season of “Good Omens” on Amazon Prime Video may challenge or redefine what we typically understand as a “season” in television.

On Thursday, the streamer owned by Amazon revealed that the show, featuring Michael Sheen and David Tennant and adapted from Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s novel, will conclude with a standalone, full-length episode. Production for this 90-minute segment is scheduled to start in Scotland at the beginning of next year.

Amazon Prime Video stated that Gaiman won’t be part of the production for the series finale, although he did help write it. Earlier this year, five women accused the author of sexual misconduct, which is discussed in depth in a podcast named “Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman“. He has denied these allegations but chose to step back from the final episodes of “Good Omens” so that production could continue and wrap up the story.

In December 2023, the streaming platform decided to continue Good Omens, bringing it back for its concluding season. This series revolves around two main characters – angel Aziraphale (Sheen) and demon Crowley (Tennant). The plot follows them as they join forces to prevent the apocalypse, or Armageddon. Originally, the show was intended to be a limited series, but due to its popularity, it returned for a second season in July 2023.

Rob Wilkins from Narrativia, acting as the representative for Terry Pratchett’s estate, along with Josh Cole, head of comedy at BBC Studios Productions, will oversee the final installment/episode. The production of Good Omens is a joint venture between Amazon MGM Studios, BBC Studios Productions, and Narrativia.

Amazon’s streaming service, Prime Video, is also set to air another adaptation by Neil Gaiman titled “Anansi Boys.” Although production on this series has wrapped up, a release date hasn’t been announced yet (it might be moved to 2025). Both “Anansi Boys” and “Good Omens” were born from a first-look agreement between Gaiman and Amazon. The Hollywood Reporter has inquired about the current status of this deal.
