‘Goosebumps’ Producer Says Cliffhanger Endings Are Inspired by R.L. Stine

The eight episodes of “Goosebumps: The Vanishing” premiered on Disney+ a week ago, but instead of continuing the storyline from Season 1’s ending, the series underwent a significant change. Instead of following up where it left off, “Goosebumps” transformed into an anthology series, with each season featuring a new tale and different characters. The second season ended mysteriously, with Trey (played by Stony Blyden) spitting out an alien slug, leaving fans with many unanswered questions. However, executive producer Rob Letterman is not rushing to provide any clarification regarding these burning queries.

During an interview with Us Weekly, Letterman discussed the ending of “Goosebumps: The Vanishing.” When asked if Season 3 might offer some clarification about Trey’s fate or what transpired after Kanduu’s spirit possessed Nathan at the end of Season 1, his answer unfortunately didn’t provide the resolution we were hoping for.

We don’t think that far into the future. We’re one day at a time process.

Letterman disclosed that there’s a justifiable explanation behind why the Goosebumps series on Disney+ has always ended with a cliffhanger at the end of each season. Readers of R.L. Stine’s books will recognize this pattern, as his stories often conclude with the main plot resolved but a mysterious moment left unanswered to keep readers guessing if things are truly as they appear. The team behind Letterman aimed to maintain the essence of the novels by adopting this same approach.

When we moved into an anthology format, it perfectly aligned with what “Goosebumps” represents. If you’re a fan of these books, you understand that R.L. Stine doesn’t typically end his stories with a fairy tale ending. Instead, he intentionally avoids that and often concludes with a suspenseful cliffhanger or surprising twist.

Why Did ‘Goosebumps’ Switch Formats?

Season 1 of Goosebumps drew inspiration from books such as “Say Cheese and Die!” and “The Haunted Mask“. In contrast, Season 2 delved into popular titles like “Monster Blood“, “Welcome to Camp Nightmare“, and “Stay Out of the Basement“. Initially, it was anticipated that the series would follow a single, continuous narrative. However, its transformation into an anthology series took many by surprise. The reasoning behind this decision from Letterman and his team was their desire to create something entirely new and innovative.

In Season 2, our aim was to bring about a change yet retain a sense of familiarity. We wanted the fans of Season 1 to feel at home with the storytelling style, but also present something new and exciting. To achieve this, we maintained the structure of unraveling a mystery while introducing a fresh narrative. This dual approach allows us to preserve the essence of the Goosebumps TV series, yet explore it as an anthology.

As of now, it remains undecided whether Goosebumps will continue with Season 3. Consequently, the future direction isn’t clear, and it’s uncertain if we’ll find resolution to the numerous lingering questions. Realistically, it might not happen, so fans may need to prepare for the fact that each season could end on an intriguing cliffhanger, much like R.L. Stine’s books. For now, you can enjoy Goosebumps by streaming it on Disney+.
