The iconic anime series Mobile Suit Gundam, initially aired in 1979, is now set to make its big-screen debut as it undergoes a live-action adaptation. After years of development, and with notable filmmakers already on board, the production has recently picked up speed thanks to a collaboration between the property’s original company and a significant Hollywood studio. This partnership aims to breathe new life into the classic robot anime for modern audiences.
As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that Bandai Namco has joined forces with Legendary Entertainment for a live-action remake of my beloved series, Mobile Suit Gundam, helmed by none other than Jim Mickle, the mastermind behind the acclaimed show “Sweet Tooth”. Dubbed simply as Gundam, this upcoming blockbuster is destined for a nationwide cinema release. Thanks to Legendary’s involvement, it promises to be a grand production.
While they’ve dropped a tantalizing teaser poster (see below), the specifics about the film remain a bit vague. However, with development underway, we can only hope that pre-production is also in motion! The original series was set against the backdrop of a futuristic alternate reality, focusing on a teenage pilot commanding a colossal mech suit amidst a relentless conflict. But for now, details about the cast and crew remain a mystery.
Prior to Jim Mickle joining the project in 2024, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, director of Kong: Skull Island, had initially been assigned to direct Gundam for a Netflix release. However, the upcoming anime adaptation has found a fresh start and is poised for a theatrical debut. Fans of the original anime have eagerly awaited a live-action film, particularly after the impressive mech suit showed up during the climax of Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. Fortunately, it appears that this long-anticipated film is finally gaining traction and seems to be capitalizing on the wave of other live-action anime adaptations in development.
‘Gundam’ Is One of Many Live-Action Anime Projects in the Works
As a passionate movie lover, I’ve noticed that while there have been some recent attempts at live-action anime movies in Hollywood, they often fall short of expectations. Japan, however, consistently delivers impressive live-action adaptations of its own anime and manga series. Interestingly, the U.S. has started to dip its toes back into the anime pool.
On the small screen, Netflix has taken on the challenge of adapting several classic anime and manga titles, with varying success. For instance, the short-lived “Cowboy Bebop” series and the well-received “One Piece” show, which recently concluded filming Season 2.
Netflix seems determined to keep exploring this beloved medium, with rumors swirling about potential live-action adaptations of global sensations like “Demon Slayer.” It will be exciting to see how they tackle such a popular and iconic series!
Simultaneously, outside Netflix, it’s been rumored that Warner Bros. Pictures is developing a live-action movie for “Bleach”. This isn’t entirely surprising, as the studio has also been keen on turning “Akira” into a big-screen blockbuster, but its progress has faced numerous setbacks. Previously, Taika Waititi was assigned to direct the adaptation, but disagreements with the studio have left the film in limbo. Meanwhile, Destin Daniel Cretton is slated to direct a “Naruto” film for Lionsgate, although it seems to be still in the early stages of production. If “Gundam” keeps progressing at its current pace, it could be the next major live-action anime movie to hit cinemas globally.
