Hema Malini calls Vinesh Phogat ‘heroine of this Olympics’ hours after issuing a controversial statement on her disqualification from finals

As a fervent admirer of Hema Malini, who has not only graced our silver screens with her mesmerizing performances but also shown her mettle in the realm of politics, I find myself deeply moved by her reaction to Vinesh Phogat’s unfortunate disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024 finals.

Former actor and current politician Hema Malini, after hearing about Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024 finals, advised her to maintain her weight. After expressing her initial thoughts in a news interview near the parliament, she later posted an inspiring message for Vinesh on her social media platforms.

Recently, as a lifestyle advisor, I found myself inspired by the spirit of resilience displayed by Vinesh Phogat during the ongoing Paris Olympics. Taking to social media, the remarkable Hema Malini expressed her admiration for Vinesh, stating, “Vinesh Phogat, the entire nation stands united behind you! You are the shining star of these Olympics. Keep your spirits high – you were born for greatness and a promising future lies ahead. Carry on with courage (folded hand emoji).”

Take a look

Earlier on Wednesday, the actress had commented on Phogat’s disqualification from the finals, finding it surprising and stating that it seemed odd to be disqualified due to a difference of just 100 grams in weight.

“Kitna mehatwa hain apna weight aur wazan ko theek se rakhna! Hum sab ko isse ek achha seekh milna chahiye sab kalakaro ko, mahilayon ko sabko… ki (It is important to keep the weight in check. It is a lesson for all of us that) 100 gm also matters a lot! We feel very sad for her. I wish she loses that 100 grams quickly lekin milega nahi abhi (but she would not get an opportunity),” she had said.

For those not familiar, Phogat, a wrestler in the 50kg freestyle category, was discovered to be slightly overweight for the competition, tipping the scales at 100 grams more than the allowed weight for the game. Normally competing in the 53kg category, she had attempted to meet the 50kg limit for the Paris Olympics by reducing her weight. However, during the second day of weigh-ins, she surpassed the limit by a mere 100 grams.

The day following her disqualification, Phogat expressed her retirement intention on platform X with a poignant Hindi note saying, “Mother Wrestling defeated me, I surrendered. Please forgive me, your dream and my spirit have shattered. I no longer possess the strength needed.”

“Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024,” she further added.
