James Gunn’s reboot is ready to take off this year, but some fans find it hard to move on from the past. While supporters of the controversial SnyderVerse have been critical of this year’s Superman since its announcement, others lament that Henry Cavill was not given another opportunity to portray the Man of Steel. It appears that the fans of Cavill have taken to Twitter using the hashtag #HenryCavillSuperman, following the release and somewhat unfavorable reception of David Corenswet’s Superman footage.
@bekoumovies” expresses that “Henry Cavill truly embodies Steel Man #Superman,” while “@Brandon Hero Guy Robinson” comments, “Fans seemed to undervalue Cavill’s Superman, shaking their heads.” Both posts were shared alongside an image showing Corenswet and Cavill in flight as Supermen. The video that sparked this debate among Superman enthusiasts surfaced earlier this week, with many fans focusing intently on the climactic scene where Superman performs a barrel roll, providing a fish-eye view of his face.
Some people are criticizing James Gunn for not sticking to the blueprint established by Zack Snyder and the Wachowskis with his latest project. For instance, @SamuEl_KentMan commented that the images released resemble Marvel’s Adam Warlock and DC’s Black Adam but find them disappointing. However, it seems they overlook similar awkward-looking images of Cavill’s Man of Steel.
Perhaps We Should Give the ‘Superman’ Reboot a Chance?
A group of enthusiasts have initiated a catchphrase-led movement, where they express their admiration by declaring their name and adding “this resembles a Superman to me,” often accompanied by an illustration or video clip of Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman. Many are disheartened that the sequel to Man of Steel, which never came to fruition, as @TheCurlyRay puts it, “Man of Steel ignited my love for Superman. Henry Cavill is this generation’s Superman #HenryCavillSuperman.
Unluckily, the release of the footage has sparked hopes among some that James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU may not succeed before it even starts. Many continue to wish for a return or sale of the SnyderVerse to Netflix, but such possibilities are extremely rare.
In theaters on July 11, 2025, Superman launches a reimagined DC universe, combining epic action, humor, and emotional depth to portray a Superman who is guided by kindness and faith in humanity. The cast includes David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent (Twisters, Hollywood), Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor (the X-Men movies, Nosferatu), along with several other talented actors such as Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Neva Howell.
