As a woman of color who has grown up watching and yearning for stories that resonate with my experiences, I am thrilled to see the release of two powerful films like ‘Hidden Figures’ and ‘The Six Triple Eight’. Both films are testaments to the strength, resilience, and intelligence of Black women, a narrative that is too often overlooked in Hollywood.

The recently obtained historical drama by Netflix, titled The Six Triple Eight, is generating buzz with its premiere on the streaming service. This captivating production sheds light on the awe-inspiring narrative of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, an exclusively female and African-American unit that served during World War II. Notable Hollywood figures such as Kerry Washington and Oprah Winfrey are among the stars in this production, directed by Tyler Perry. While critical reviews for the film have yet to be widely circulated (released in select cinemas on December 6, 2024), fans of war-themed stories should find something intriguing within it.

Because this new film spotlights the significant role and influence of Black women who aided the USA in times of conflict and adversity, it has been likened to the critically acclaimed “Hidden Figures,” directed by Theodore Melfi. Released on January 6, 2017, “Hidden Figures” stars Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, and Janelle Monáe. The movie centers around the true tale of three Black mathematicians, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, who worked for NASA during the intense Space Race. Just like “The Six Triple Eight” and “Hidden Figures,” both films have garnered recognition and attention for portraying the stories of underrepresented groups and emphasizing the profound impact of their contributions to the USA.

The Six Triple Eight is based on an article from a 2019 magazine about World War II history, written by Kevin M. Hymel titled “Fighting a Two-Front War.” This article offers insights into the background of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, a topic further explored in the Tyler Perry film. The movie highlights lesser-known tales about historical figures who were part of or influenced this battalion. Notable real-life characters portrayed include Major Charity Adams (Kerry Washington), Lena Derriecott King (Ebony Obsidian), Mary McLeod Bethune (Oprah Winfrey), among others.

The movie’s storyline highlights the bravery of the 885 women in the battalion, who were entrusted with the massive job of clearing a three-year pile of mail destined for soldiers fighting overseas. Remarkably, these women successfully handled approximately 17 million letters amidst discrimination, misogyny, and turmoil in their war-stricken nation. Working in unison, they aimed to provide solace and encouragement to the troops on the battlefield. The film, The Six Triple Eight, aims to shine a bright light on these inspiring tales of heroism.

Connecting the powerful narrative of The Six Triple Eight, similar to that portrayed in the critically acclaimed Hidden Figures, could potentially draw a significant portion of its audience. With Hidden Figures‘ impressive 93% score, some viewers may find themselves intrigued by The Six Triple Eight when it becomes available on Netflix. Both films celebrate the exceptional courage and silent heroism displayed by Black women during tumultuous periods in history. Running through both stories are themes of conquering intricate hurdles, resisting oppression, and banding together to contribute to a larger cause for justice.

The two films likewise derive their strength from their distinguished female ensembles and their decision to center the narrative off the battlefield. Most war movies usually concentrate on male soldiers actively involved in combat, often neglecting the significant contributions of other groups working away from the front lines. Similar to Hidden Figures and The Six Triple Eight, these films bring forth untold tales and are expected to appeal to audiences fond of historical dramas who might prefer to avoid the graphic violence commonly found in traditional war movies.

The movie “Hidden Figures,” which received acclaim from critics and drew a large audience, suggests that films in the historical drama niche have a high chance of success. The question now is whether “The Six Triple Eight” will achieve similar success. At this point, critical reviews are not providing a definitive answer. Currently, the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score stands at 64%, but with only a few critics offering opinions and no audience feedback yet. More reviews are expected to emerge after the movie’s Netflix release.

For now, “The Six Triple Eight” has garnered numerous honors such as a Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Original Song (“The Journey” by Diane Warren, sung by H.E.R) and a Celebration of Cinema and Television Icon Award for Tyler Perry. The movie will also be recognized at the African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) Awards Ceremony on February 19, 2025. Although critics’ opinions remain unclear at this time, it is evident that the film is making a mark in the entertainment industry. You can stream “The Six Triple Eight” on Netflix. For those interested, “Hidden Figures” can be rented on Apple TV and Amazon Prime.
