Hollywood Style: What to Wear Now

As a long-time gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds, I must admit that this article about Hollywood fashion is a refreshing change of pace. It’s fascinating to see how even the most powerful figures in Tinseltown are grappling with the same questions of comfort and style that we all face in our everyday lives.

Some prominent talent agents, such as Hylda Queally who represents stars like Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet, and Ari Emanuel, whose spouse is fashion designer Sarah Staudinger, are still engaging in business negotiations while dressed up. However, most agents, much like other employed individuals in the area, are dialing back their style to avoid ostentatious clothing that could potentially appear expensive. One agent stated, “You don’t want to outshine your clients; they might wonder if you’re earning more than them, especially now.” Andrew Weitz, a former WME agent turned fashion consultant, has noticed a return to pre-pandemic attire, but with a more casual and understated twist: “Now it’s about wearing a blazer with a button-up or sweater – a blend of professional and casual.” Essentially, high-end suits are no longer the uniform of choice. Although Richard Weitz, Andrew’s brother and an employee at WME, hasn’t given up his Armani attire just yet.

Producers

Valerie Van Galder, a producer from Mortal Kombat, prefers to dress casually for screenings with oversized Levi’s or Altuzarra striped bell-bottoms, tank tops, and Vince jackets in various colors. However, she jokes that people don’t hire her for her fashion sense. In contrast, other producers project power through wool and cashmere blends. Shonda Rhimes, who primarily works from home in Connecticut, often wears comfortable sweaters from brands like St. John Knits, Chanel, and Veronica Beard, frequently pairing them with Gucci loafers. Meanwhile, male producers, such as Bill Block from The Gentlemen, continue to opt for their usual choice: wearing black all the time, stating that it requires minimal thought.

Directors

Blue jeans and baseball caps are practically mandatory while shooting on the set — and that goes for Ron Howard as well as Chloé Zhao. Steven Spielberg often wears denim top to bottom; Spike Lee is never without his varsity jacket; and Greta Gerwig donned a utility jacket while filming Barbie (but it wasn’t pink). A few directors dress it up a bit: Sofia Coppola sports button-down white shirts and flats, John Woo wears a dress shirt tucked into chinos, Paul Feig is sticking with the three-piece suit thing and Tim Burton continues to dress in goth black.

Studio Execs

According to stylist Gallagher, studio leaders are moving away from wearing suits daily. This shift towards a more democratic environment means everyone is treated equally. However, this doesn’t signify they’re attending meetings in distressed denim. Instead, producer Andre Caraco describes the new power style as less rigid and more comfortable. He also mentions an increased preference for sneakers. Traditionally, female studio executives have favored high fashion, with Sherry Lansing often seen in Armani suits. Recently, Universal chairperson Donna Langley has opted for avant-garde pieces by Rick Owens, Margiela, and The Row. Other female execs are adopting softer, understated designs, such as a Yves Saint Laurent jacket layered over a well-tailored dress or skirt, which seems less expensive despite costing around $2,200.

Screenwriters

Have you noticed the last time Steven Zaillian was spotted wearing a suit? Indeed, as observed by stylist Meg Gallagher, screenwriters typically dress casual with T-shirts, Levi’s, Ace, or Carhartt jeans. They often pair these with a Kapital jean jacket and sneakers like Margiela, Sambas and Gazelles, Adidas Handball Spezial, except for a few exceptions. Aaron Sorkin is known to wear formal shirts, ties, and chinos; Wes Anderson prefers college blazers; Gus Van Sant favors oversized hoodies; while Taika Waititi’s style is unpredictable – he could be seen in anything from a velvet tuxedo to long pearls.

Actors

As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say: “I’ve got two favorites when it comes to off-screen attire – Loro Piana cashmere tracksuits. Seems like some big-name celebs (both guys and gals) are rocking these luxurious two-pieces at meetings, each one setting you back a cool 10 grand. As they say, ‘comfort comes with a price tag.’ And let me tell you, everyone who catches a glimpse knows it’s the real deal.
