In retrospect, Chris Columbus expresses a desire that he could erase President Donald Trump’s well-known appearance from the film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
The director disclosed during an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle on Monday that Trump’s brief role in the movie has turned out to be a problematic situation, one he regrets and would like to undo. Interestingly, Columbus originally considered removing the scene from the second Home Alone sequel but ultimately decided to keep it after the audience responded favorably during a test screening.
We showed the movie in Chicago, and during that particular scene, the crowd erupted with excitement. They cheered, they laughed, and found it extremely funny. Although I believe I have a good understanding of comedy, I was surprised to discover that this scene would be considered so amusing.
In 2020, the director of The Goonies shared with Business Insider that Trump made an appearance in the film due to a condition set by him: “You can only use The Plaza if I’m in the movie.” However, Trump contested this account on Truth Social in 2023, stating that it was actually the director who was eager for his involvement in the movie.
Three decades following the movie’s premiere, Columbus admitted that the cameo has turned into a burden for him, yet he was eager and desperate to shoot at The Plaza Hotel during production.
Now, it’s something I regret having around. I can’t help but wonder what he’s thinking. He accused me of lying, but I assure you, that’s not the case. Contrary to what he said, I never begged anyone who isn’t an actor to appear in a movie.
Columbus also quipped that if his scene in the movie was removed, he might be deported. However, he would prefer if it didn’t exist at all.
He stated, ‘I’m unable to do this.’ He explained that if he were to proceed, it could potentially label him as unsuitable for living in the U.S., causing him to return to Italy or some other place.
