As a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for nostalgia and Christmas magic, I can wholeheartedly say that the Home Alone franchise is more than just a series of films – it’s a cherished holiday tradition that transcends generations. The love for these movies is not only due to their hilarious antics and heartwarming moments but also because of the incredible talent brought together by the genius mind of John Hughes.

Is it really Christmas without hearing the iconic phrase, “Merry Christmas, you filthy animals”? The beloved movies Home Alone and its sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, currently rank #2 and #4 on Disney+’s Top 10 list. Alongside these films, Disney+ offers a variety of Christmas-themed content, including The Polar Express, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Special, The Santa Clause, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Fred Claus, Christmas with the Kranks, and Jingle All the Way.

During the presentation of Macaulay Culkin’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023, Catherine O’Hara expressed that the enduring popularity of “Home Alone” can be attributed to Culkin’s acting. She stated during the event (as reported by Newsweek), “Home Alone has been, is, and will always be a cherished global phenomenon.” O’Hara added that the reason families worldwide continue to watch and cherish “Home Alone” each year is due to Macaulay Culkin’s performance.

During the production of the film, Hughes preferred not to alter the script much. However, some of the most impactful scenes, like Culkin’s astonished response upon using aftershave and John Candy’s funeral parlor scene (spontaneously acted out at 4:30 a.m.), were improvised. It was Kieran Culkin’s debut on-screen role in the movie. Yet, it’s interesting to know that the current Succession star admitted, as a seven-year-old, he had no understanding of what the movie was about.

Apart from uniting families through its story, the classic movie has also maintained connections among its cast members. Recently, five actors who portrayed the McCallister children gathered together for a meet-and-greet event at Pandora’s Box Toys & Collectibles in Lafayette, New Jersey – an occasion that took place more than three decades after the film’s initial release.

Back in 2015, O’Hara shared with Andy Cohen on the show Watch What Happens Live that they had bumped into Macaulay Culkin at a Martin Mull art exhibition a few years earlier. Upon seeing her, he excitedly called out, “Mommy!”, and she affectionately responded, “Baby!
