As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of cinema for the better part of six decades, I must say that Ridley Scott’s non-interference in the direction of “Alien: Romulus” is both refreshing and commendable. The man behind the iconic Xenomorph has demonstrated a remarkable level of trust and faith in director Fede Alvarez, allowing him to breathe new life into this venerable franchise.
In 1979, filmmaker Ridley Scott revolutionized the genre of sci-fi horror with the release of ‘Alien’. Over the years, this groundbreaking work has led to a series that includes the upcoming ‘Alien: Romulus’. Though Scott has handed over directorial duties to others like James Cameron and David Fincher, he’s often returned to the Alien universe as producer or even director, as seen in 2012’s ‘Prometheus’ and 2017’s ‘Alien: Covenant’. In the case of ‘Alien: Romulus’, Scott is an executive producer but has chosen not to intervene in the directing, with Fede Alvarez at the helm.
As I shared with the Los Angeles Times, I was deeply immersed in the creation of “Alien: Romulus.” In fact, I collaborated closely with Alvarez to streamline the initial script, which happened to be a bit overly extensive. But when it came time for direction and giving guidance, I stepped back and allowed Alvarez to face off against the Xenomorph on his own terms, using his unique vision to shape the project.
At times, it feels overwhelming to receive guidance from anyone, even family members, because advice seems unwelcome during those moments. Frankly, I don’t require advice. If I end up in a situation where I’ve made a mistake and suffer the consequences, I take full responsibility by saying, “It was my fault.”
Ridley Scott Admits Fede Alvarez Had a Clear Picture of What His Film Was
In regards to crafting the script, while Scott provided some minor adjustments, the director acknowledges that Alvarez had a distinct vision for the narrative he wished to convey. His feedback primarily revolved around the script’s length.
As someone who has spent years working in the world of franchises, I can attest to their inherent vulnerability – they need constant reinvention and fresh ideas to survive. Fede, a man brimming with energy and passion, was just the spark needed to breathe new life into our struggling franchise. With his firm blueprint in mind and a clear script, he took charge and ran with it, showing no fear of the long journey ahead. And while the screenplay is always lengthy, Fede’s determination and focus were unwavering. Together, we embarked on a journey to revitalize our franchise, and I couldn’t be more excited about what lies ahead for us under his leadership.
In a promising show of support for Alvarez, director Scott expresses his hope that Alvarez is open to working on another installment, as he anticipates the movie will be highly successful and believes Alvarez is ideal to continue the franchise. Scott stated, “‘I hope Fede has another film idea in store because I think this one will do exceptionally well. He’s got a knack for genius.’” This endorsement from a renowned director within the movie industry should undoubtedly boost Alvarez’s confidence before the upcoming movie hits theaters.
Under the guidance of director Alvarez, who collaborated with Rodo Sayagues on the script, the movie titled Alien: Romulus is set between the occurrences of Alien and Aliens. The story revolves around a band of space explorers who are searching for resources in a derelict space station. However, what should have been a routine task for this young crew becomes a nightmare when they stumble upon an utterly horrifying extraterrestrial life form while delving deep into the cold expanse of space. The film boasts an impressive cast including Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fern, and Aileen Wu.
