It looks like another anticipated finale without resolution for us book enthusiasts. As the 2025 TV lineup unfolds, unfortunately, Hulu has decided to terminate a show I held dear – “How to Die Alone,” starring Natasha Rothwell. Regrettably, this series is now among those ending or being canceled in 202X. While I’m certainly disappointed by the news, there might be some positive developments on the horizon; if not an incentive for Hulu subscribers to watch it immediately.
According to Variety’s report, it was confirmed that the one-season hit show has been canceled. Interestingly, series star and creator Natasha Rothwell expressed a glimmer of optimism in her statement about the decision.
Over the course of eight years, I’ve worked tirelessly to see this project come to fruition, and through that journey, I’ve learned an invaluable lesson: persistence pays off. Regardless of the challenges ahead, I am determined not to back down. My team and I are resolute in our pursuit of finding ‘How to Die Alone’ a new platform, as tales like this one hold immense significance.
The search is underway for a new home for “How to Die Alone,” and I, among others, am keeping my fingers crossed that it succeeds. Ms. Rothwell has crafted a worthy spiritual successor to her work on “Insecure,” where she was both a co-star and writer for the Issa Rae-led HBO series. Regrettably, this announcement echoes the sentiments expressed by Rae when “Rap Shit” was canceled in 2024, as the streaming industry’s corporate culture continues to evolve.
However, on a narrative perspective, the inaugural and thus far solitary season of Natasha Rothwell’s show concludes in a suspenseful fashion, leaving many plot threads unresolved. For those eager to witness How to Die Alone, I won’t disclose the climactic events; suffice it to say, it was skillfully crafted as a setup for further compelling narratives.
It’s not just me who feels deeply touched by Rothwell’s creation on TopMob staff; Jerrica Tisdale also felt a strong connection to it. In fact, she listed numerous reasons why the series How to Die Alone resonated with her, adding further evidence to why this Onyx Collective production is valuable. Unlike many works of fiction that offer relatable aspects in scattered ways, Mel’s journey through trials and tribulations offers some of the most authentic examples of humor in human life experiences.

Enthusiasts of the past writer for SNL shouldn’t need to endure a long wait before catching her on TV again, as Natasha Rothwell is set to reappear in The White Lotus during Season 3, showcasing her distinctive comedic pacing once more. This news offers a sense of relief, but I must admit that I align with her current focus – the resolve to complete the tale of her Hulu series.
It’s either a reboot on another channel or maybe a concluding movie to wrap up the story, but whatever it is, the story of Mel and her life lessons at JFK Airport deserves a fitting conclusion. Although I’m sad about the series being canceled prematurely, I won’t completely give up hope that creator Ms. Rothwell and her team will get another chance to fly again.
