I Finally Played DOOM 2016

Since the rebooted series of DOOM: The Dark Ages has arrived on modern consoles, I figured it was high time for me to take a spin at this game. The acclaim for DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal has been immense, particularly for their exhilarating fast-paced gameplay. As someone who isn’t always fond of first-person shooters, a significant discount was needed before I dared to give

Having grabbed my first game for Nintendo Switch at a reduced cost of $5, I am now confident to assert that the highly-praised DOOM 2016 truly lives up to its reputation. On the existing Nintendo Switch platform, this shooter proves itself to be a formidable demon slayer, delivering an enjoyable gaming experience all along.

When the game commenced by having your character dodge backstory and instead blast their way out, I immediately sensed that this would be a fantastic shooting game. Since I find the mythology of this series unengaging, it was gratifying to see the game disregard it. This meant less chatter and more action, which is the key asset of this shooter.

Traversing rooms teeming with adversaries guaranteed uninterrupted excitement as my character’s journey was constantly punctuated by conflict. The sheer pleasure of gunning down demons amplified with each kill, making every victory more exhilarating than the last. Perhaps it’s the thrill of their heads bursting or the sound cues accompanying each takedown, but I found myself engrossed in this game for countless hours.

In DOOM 2016, the Glory Kill feature was simply fantastic to utilize. Although you might expect it to become monotonous as you witness the same animations repeatedly due to its frequent use, in theory, the Glory Kills are brilliantly designed. What makes them so great is that not only do they provide an entertaining animation, but they also cause defeated enemies to drop ammo and health. As the difficulty of enemies increases later in the game, this feature becomes indispensable and remains satisfying, especially with the added rewards following each use.

It’s refreshing that even a game as intense and ominous as DOOM 2016 maintains an element of humor. Although its narrative may be serious, players can still enjoy exploring various areas, doing some platforming, gathering numerous collectibles, and simply enjoying the demon-slaying action. Given the mixed response to DOOM 3’s horror-focused approach, this lighter direction seems fitting.

Regarding playing this game on Nintendo Switch, it offers a delightful gaming experience, and kudos to the developers for optimizing it to run smoothly even on a comparatively less powerful device. Some enthusiasts might argue that the shooter looks better on Steam Deck, but there’s an undeniable charm in witnessing such a well-executed port running and looking so good on relatively weaker hardware.

2016’s DOOM delivers an outstanding performance, and that holds true even on Nintendo Switch. Fortunately for fans, there’s no need to wait for a potential Switch 2 port since the game performs admirably on the original console. It’s also available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC platforms.
