I Just Found Out Elsbeth Is Not The First Time Michael Emerson And Carrie Preston Have Appeared Together On One Of Their Shows

It turns out I’ve just recently entered the realm of “Elsbeth”. Prior to watching the series, I was unfamiliar with Carrie Preston. I also didn’t realize that Michael Emerson, who made an appearance in “Elsbeth” during the last few episodes of 2024, is her husband. Now, I find myself captivated by them and their dynamic on the CBS show. However, what really took me aback was discovering that this wasn’t their first time working together, and it’s hard to believe I hadn’t known about their past collaborations before now.

Before Elsbeth graced the screen as the nearly invincible murderer and judge Milton Crawford, Preston had already made a significant impact in two prominent TV series. Indeed, she was a recurring character on both Lost and Person of Interest.

They’ve been wedded since 1998 and have collaborated on several ventures together, including the critically acclaimed drama series, Lost, from the early 2000s. In 2007, Preston made an appearance in one episode of this blockbuster show to portray Emily Linus, the mother of Emerson’s character Ben. Although she was only seen in a flashback and didn’t share any scenes with her real-life spouse at that time, their on-screen dynamic remains intriguing.

In a light-hearted exchange during an interview with Variety, they jokingly discussed the bizarre incident by exchanging quips.

  • Michael Emerson: A Freudian nightmare.
  • Carrie Preston: Yeah, that’s something when you give birth to your husband in the woods. Not many people can say that they’ve done that.
  • Michael Emerson: At least I didn’t have to play that scene.

Later, they even joked that Emerson should play Preston’s father in a flashback at some point.

After a brief stint on “Lost,” I found myself returning to one of my husband’s hit shows, “Person of Interest.” From 2012 to 2016, I graced eight episodes of the beloved thriller as Grace Hendricks, the fiancée of Harold Finch, played by Emerson. It was a delight to be part of such an engaging series.

Beyond starring in the roles that made Emerson a household name across two of my favorite shows, Preston also graced the screen on her hit series “Claws” in 2017. To top it off, this dynamic duo has collaborated on several smaller projects over the years. These collaborations span from their joint appearance in the 1998 TV movie “Grace and Glorie,” to their roles in the 2004 film “Straight-Jacket” and the 2008 production “Ready? OK!”. In essence, they’ve built a rapport both on and off set, making them no strangers to working together.

Currently, Preston and Emerson have collaborated before, but this time they are portraying adversaries. Interestingly enough, this role suits them well, as Elsbeth’s character usually develops light-hearted personalities, while her husband frequently plays sinister roles in productions. To illustrate, the star of Person of Interest on CBS aptly described this collaboration, stating:

It’s like a collision of universes.

Indeed, just as Preston put it, Judge Crawford plays a role similar to “Moriarty” for Elsbeth, much like how Sherlock’s adversary is Moriarty in the stories. Observing their dynamic has been quite entertaining.

In the meantime, as we anticipate Elsbeth’s comeback on TV schedules in 2025 (specifically on January 30), I plan to rewatch some episodes of Person of Interest and Lost to catch a glimpse of this couple’s careers intertwining. Their on-screen chemistry on CBS was captivating, and their 26-year marriage demonstrates that they are equally compelling off-screen. I can hardly wait to see more of their collaborations!

To achieve our objective, let’s revisit the collaborative works of Carrie Preston and Michael Emerson by streaming “Elsbeth” on Paramount+, “Lost” on Netflix, and “Person of Interest” on Amazon Prime Video.
