‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Reboot to Star Camila Mendes, Madelyn Cline (Exclusive)

As a hardcore fan of horror movies and a dedicated follower of Hollywood news, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming reboot of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” The new cast is shaping up to be a powerhouse of talent!

I Know What You Did Last Summer is hooking its cast ahead of a planned release next summer.

Madelyn Cline from “Outer Banks” on Netflix and Camila Mendes known for her role as Veronica in “Riverdale” are considering starring roles in Sony Pictures’ upcoming remake of the 1997 horror movie.

In addition, Sarah Pidgeon, a Tony Award nominee, Atlanta’s Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King, known for his role as Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action version of The Little Mermaid, are also involved in the negotiations.

Previously, THR announced that Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. were considering returning to act in the sequel based on earlier reports.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, along with Sam Lansky, wrote the screenplay for her upcoming directing project, titled “Do Revenge.” Originally, Leah McKendrick penned an initial script. Neal Moritz, a producer from the original production, is involved in producing this reboot.

Sony has scheduled the release of the feature for July 18, 2025.

The thriller film “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” starring Hewitt, Prinze, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe, made its debut in cinemas on October 17, 1997. It went on to gross over $72 million ($142 million adjusted for inflation) at the box office. The plot revolves around a group of friends being hunted by a vengeful villain with a hook after they attempt to conceal hitting him with their car. The film’s script was written by Kevin Williamson, who also penned “Scream,” and was inspired by Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel of the same title.

Hewitt and Prinze reappeared in the 1998 follow-up film titled “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,” while a new group of actors took the lead in the 2006 movie named “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer,” which was exclusively released for home viewing. Amazon premiered a television series adapted from the franchise in 2021.

The model for the new take is the 2022 Scream reboot, which saw members of the original cast mix it up with a cast of young up-and-comers, which in that case included Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera. It also follows a studio strategy of trying to build a next generation of stars, as seen with the Sydney Sweeney-Glen Powell rom-com Anyone But You.

I made a big splash with my performance as Veronica on Riverdale, which wrapped up its production not too long ago. Lately, I’ve been busy adding credits to my resume, like starring in the upcoming movies Upgraded (2024) and Música. Not to forget, I worked alongside Robinson on the 2022 Netflix hit Do Revenge, a teen black comedy.

Cline gained recognition for portraying Sarah Cameron on the show “Outer Banks.” Furthermore, she made an appearance on the list of potential suspects in Rian Johnson’s movie “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”

Pidgeon is currently shining on Broadway in the musical “Stereophonic,” where she’s reprising her original role of “Diana.” This “play with music” about a Fleetwood Mac-esque band on the brink of fame broke records this year by earning an impressive 13 Tony Award nominations, one of which was for Pidgeon. Additionally, her performance has been recognized with nominations for the Drama League’s “Distinguished Performance” Award and the Outer Critics Circle’s “Outstanding Featured Performer” award. In the world of television, she made an appearance as a young Kathryn Hahn in Tiny Beautiful Things on Hulu and was a main character in Amazon’s The Wilds.

In September 2025, Swifty (previously known as Withers) is set for his cinematic debut after finishing production on “Him,” formerly titled “Goat,” for Universal Pictures and Monkeypaw Productions. Swifty stars as the main character in this psychological thriller, where he portrays a promising NFL quarterback who receives an invitation to work alongside the team’s aging veteran, represented by Marlon Wayans.

British actor Hauer-King gained prominence by featuring in TV versions of “Little Women” and “Howard’s End.” More recently, he took the lead role in the new historical drama “The Tattooist of Auschwitz,” which premiered on Peacock this past spring.

Cline is represented by a quartet of talent agencies including CAA, Bold Talent Agency, Entertainment 360, and Hirsch Wallerstein. In contrast, Mendes is managed by just two agencies: CAA and Luber Roklin Entertainment.

I’m represented by Gersh, Anonymous Content, and Jackoway Austen. Pidgeon also has the same agencies representing him. Additionally, Withers is represented by CAA and Jackoway Austen, just like us. As for Hauer-King, she is in good company with CAA, United Agents from the UK, and Jackoway Austen. We all share top-tier representation!
