As a fan, I’m absolutely thrilled to hear about Ice Spice’s heartwarming friendship with the enigmatic Taylor Swift. The way she described her initial reaction to receiving the news of their potential collaboration is something that truly resonates with me as a music lover and a fan of both artists.
Ice Spice speaks candidly about her close bond with Taylor Swift, whom she regards as her most prominent famous friend.
In an interview for Rolling Stone’s front page, Ice Spice described her emotions when her manager phoned to announce Swift’s intention to team up with her for a remix of “Karma,” which features on her album Midnights. She revealed this happened while she was living alone in her New Jersey apartment, with her producer Riot present as they worked in the studio.
The rapper shared with the publication how he typically receives texts from this person. But on this occasion, they called instead, saying “You ready for this?” I assumed it was going to be some unwelcome news. To my surprise, however, they told me Taylor Swift had given me a track for her new album. I tried to act nonchalant on the phone, responding with “Oh, that’s cool. Very cool.” After hanging up, I broke down in tears in my walk-in closet, thinking “This isn’t real life.” Riot captured the moment, which might end up in a future documentary.
When Ice Spice and Taylor Swift collaborated on a bonus track, some critics assumed it was Swift trying to boost her image due to Ice Spice’s recent rise in popularity. However, Ice Spice expressed her disappointment at this perception, stating, “Why wouldn’t she (Swift) want to be friends with me? Taylor finds me amusing. I believe our humors complement each other well.”
After Swift was reportedly dating Matty Healy from The 1975 in May 2023, their friendship received more scrutiny. Old comments made by Healy about Swift resurfaced, causing controversy on social media. In an interview with The Adam Friedland Show in February 2023, he joked insensitively about her, comparing her to an “Inuit Spice Girl” and a “chubby Chinese lady.”
Healy didn’t make the derisive remarks himself during the show, but he joined in on the laughter as the hosts mimicked Chinese and indigenous accents. Apologies were reportedly made by him to Ice Spice at a concert in Auckland, New Zealand, several months later. However, in an interview with The New Yorker, Healy downplayed the significance of the incident, stating that it wasn’t a major concern for him.
In her interview with Rolling Stone, Ice Spice shared that she became aware of the incident much later than others, explaining, “I found out about it over a month afterward, if I recall correctly. He apologized repeatedly, but I didn’t grasp the gravity of the situation for many. It seemed people were seeking reasons to be displeased. I wasn’t harboring anger or sadness; instead, I was left feeling puzzled. Indifference was my emotion towards that matter.”
