As a seasoned film enthusiast with decades of immersion in the dynamic world of cinema, I find this latest development from IMDb to be a breath of fresh air. The ability for SAG-AFTRA members to proudly display their union affiliation on their profiles is not just a professional badge, but a testament to their commitment to the craft and camaraderie within the industry.
As a dedicated member of SAG-AFTRA, I’m thrilled to share that IMDb now gives us the opportunity to proudly showcase our union affiliation on both our public and IMDbPro profiles! This new feature not only highlights our commitment to the performers’ community but also strengthens the bond between us and our fellow industry professionals.
In September, the online film and TV database owned by Amazon began offering verified badges for union members on IMDbPro. According to an IMDbPro representative speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, this new feature aims to help entertainment professionals highlight their careers more effectively by verifying their membership in a professional organization. Members who verify their affiliations will have the organization’s logo displayed prominently in the ‘Verified Affiliations’ section on both their IMDb and IMDbPro profile pages.
IMDbPro represents an advanced, subscription-based platform similar to the well-known IMDb, providing details about agents, production companies, and their respective contact information, in addition to several other useful features.
Users of both IMDbPro’s free and paid subscription services can now confirm their union membership and showcase badges on their profiles. In addition, premium users can refine their advanced searches based on SAG-AFTRA membership status. As part of this update, verified union members with badges are eligible for a 30% discount on IMDbPro Premium subscriptions.
The new feature has been implemented since December 2023, which coincides with the introduction of verified badges for Casting Society of America (CSA) members, an association for active casting professionals. However, IMDb did not provide a response when asked about the possibility of other labor unions receiving their own badges in the future. Nevertheless, the website indicates that it could potentially verify affiliations with members of various other groups, hinting at a broader scope in the future.
SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher expressed delight in the ongoing partnership with IMDb, which enables SAG-AFTRA members to have control over their representation on both IMDb and IMDbPro. In a recent update, this collaboration now provides an effortless way for actors to showcase their SAG-AFTRA membership to industry professionals searching talent on IMDbPro. Moreover, this upgrade offers SAG-AFTRA members exclusive discounts on IMDbPro Premium subscriptions.
2022 marked a significant shift when IMDb introduced an update to its platform, following persistent advocacy by SAG-AFTRA. This change enabled Hollywood professionals to control the display of their real name and age on their public profiles. For years, the union had voiced concerns that revealing actors’ actual birthdates might negatively impact their job opportunities, while transgender individuals criticized IMDb for disclosing their birth names, an issue sensitive to LGBTQ communities.
Approximately twelve years following its creation by British software engineer Col Needham, the company introduced its professional branch in 2002 during the Sundance Film Festival.
