As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of viewing under my belt, I must say that the recent resurgence of Pixar’s Inside Out franchise on Disney+ has left me utterly awestruck. Growing up, I vividly remember the emotional rollercoaster that was the original 2015 release, and now, here we are with a sequel that has taken the world by storm yet again.
An adored animated series is causing quite a stir in the rankings of Disney+. As I write this, just days after the streaming debut of “Inside Out 2” on September 25, the emotionally resonant films from Disney are ruling the Top 5 on the streamer. According to Flix Patrol, the highly anticipated sequel “Inside Out 2”, the original “Inside Out”, and the 2015 short film “Riley’s First Date?” currently hold the top spots at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 respectively. If it weren’t for the film “Moana” (2016), led by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the “Inside Out” franchise would have swept the gold, silver, and bronze medals.
In June 2015, “Inside Out” became a global sensation, with its heartwarming tale of Riley Andersen and her inner feelings captivating audiences worldwide. The film’s impressive global earnings totaled $850.3 million (as reported by The Numbers). Critics were enamored with the portrayal of Anger (voiced by Lewis Black) and Joy (portrayed by Amy Poehler) within Riley’s mind, contributing to the film’s near-flawless Tomatometer rating of 98%, which it maintains to this day. Poehler, who previously starred on “Saturday Night Live,” felt immediately that a sequel was necessary. In an interview with PEOPLE, she expressed her thoughts as follows:
I’ve been persistently inquiring from Pete Docter [CEO of Pixar] and his team about a potential new production, asking when we can expect it. When they shared their concept for the sequel, I found it incredibly insightful and ingenious.
Inside Out’s Unprecedented Success
As a movie enthusiast who has seen it all, I must admit that the long wait for Inside Out 2 was worth every moment. After the delightful nine-minute short film, Riley’s First Date, in November 2015 left fans yearning for more, it wasn’t until almost a decade later that we were graced with the full-length sequel. Amy Poehler tirelessly advocated to the Pixar powers-that-be, but her persistence paid off when Inside Out 2 hit the Silver Screen in 2024. This animated masterpiece not only breathed new life into the summer movie season but also shattered box office records, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2024 with a staggering worldwide gross of $1.687 billion.
I’m thrilled to share that the sequel to my favorite movie, “Inside Out 2,” received a fantastic response! It bagged a 95% rating on the Popcornmeter (previously known as the RT audience score) on Rotten Tomatoes, and an impressive 90% Tomatometer rating from critics. MovieWeb’s review calls it a “creative journey through the trials of puberty,” while our in-house writer, Julian Roman, gave it a 3.5 out of 5. And here’s some exciting news – the director has already started brainstorming ideas for a potential third installment in this captivating saga! According to an interview (via ComicBook.com), that’s definitely something we can look forward to!
“I adore this world we’re working in. It’s an amazing playground for creativity, with ideas for settings and characters just flowing as we explore. This world is brimming with potential concepts, not just from the initial movie, but especially in this one where I think, ‘What a cool, smart idea! I’m not sure how it fits into the narrative right now, but it deserves to be included at some point.’
Despite the 2024 summer season’s cinematic offerings seemingly falling flat, the upcoming movies like Mann’s “Inside Out 2“, as well as “Deadpool & Wolverine“, have set a high bar. It will likely require exceptional performances from the fall’s eagerly awaited titles such as “Joker: Folie à Deux, Gladiator II, Wicked,” or “Venom: The Last Dance” to surpass these two summer blockbusters and claim the title of the most profitable film of the year. For now, the spotlight is on Disney+’s “Inside Out“.
“Currently, you can stream ‘Inside Out: Riley’s First Date?’ and its sequel, ‘Inside Out 2,’ on Disney+” (more casual and straightforward)
