As a long-time enthusiast of all things supernatural and a connoisseur of horror films, I must say the “Insidious” series has truly captured my spirit (pun intended). The intricate weaving of time, the rich history of The Further, and the multitude of malevolent entities it houses have me spellbound.
The Insidious movie franchise stands out as one of the best horror series due to its richly detailed aspects, well-rounded characters, and genuinely terrifying creatures and settings. Its protagonists and antagonists frequently encounter the foreboding Further, a common feature in the Insidious universe.
These outstanding films put emphasis on The Further, offering viewers a chance to delve deep into its intricate history and potential horrors. It’s home to some of the scariest creatures and tormented spirits. A visit to The Further promises an unforgettable, possibly eternal, harrowing experience.
The Insidious movies have revealed glimpses into the expansive and desolate darkness, but there’s still a lot left unexplored and shrouded in mystery about it. Here’s what we currently comprehend regarding ‘The Further’ in Insidious.
What Is The Further
The film “Insidious” features Lin Shaye’s character Elise Rainier who frequently refers to a realm known as The Further. This is a dimension unlike our own earth, not bound by the same temporal laws. It exists in a kind of limbo between light and darkness, resembling our world in many ways yet vastly different.
As a movie reviewer, I’d say: Souls find themselves stuck in an in-between world, not meant to be their final destination. It’s somewhat like a purgatory or limbo, a transitional space for souls yet to cross over to the Insidious universe’s Heaven or Hell. The Further is but one of these realms, easily accessed when one strays too far from their physical body during travel.

How To Travel To The Further
A soul may discover The Further through various paths. One common method is during sleep or an altered state, such as a trance. In the movie ‘Insidious’, Dalton (Ty Simpkins) accessed this realm while sleeping. His unique ability to travel in such a way stems from his astral projection skills. He possesses these talents due to his lineage; they were passed down from his father, Josh (Patrick Wilson), who also inherited them, and so on, from his grandfather.
The Insidious movies demonstrate that individuals who possess astral travel capabilities can venture there, though it’s not exclusive to them. In the film Insidious: Chapter 3, the character Quinn Brenner (played by Stefanie Scott) unintentionally enters The Further when she attempts to contact her late mother.
This situation gives a malignant spirit the chance to entice her into its domain. It’s important to note that it’s not definitively proven that Quinn has astral projection powers, which means we should consider the possibility that opening oneself to spiritual entities could potentially lead to The Further if a malevolent force attaches itself to someone and drags them there.
In the movie “Insidious: Chapter 2“, Elise discloses that she intentionally resides in The Further. She had previously visited a “superior realm”, but chose to return to The Further upon hearing Josh’s calls. Furthermore, Elise shares a belief that all souls must pass through The Further on their journey towards either Heaven or Hell.
This place serves as a sort of purgatory where spirits linger. Some remain here indefinitely, even though it’s understood that most eventually move on. However, the chain hasn’t disclosed why some can’t depart. For Elise, she decided to come back, suggesting it might be a choice for certain individuals, but not for everyone. This is significant because many souls are striving to depart.
They want an empty vessel to possess to escape and live again. In CZsWorld’s video on The Bride in Black, it’s theorized that some souls may remain in The Further due to unresolved issues.

The Further’s Aesthetic
In my experience, the unknown realms I’ve ventured into are remarkably dark and scarcely reveal any hints of light. It’s a place where only a flickering lamp can pierce through the shadows. This realm appears distinct to every soul and entity that passes through it. For some, it mirrors their final moments on Earth or serves as their personal torment. At times, it reflects aspects of our world, taking the form of inverted replicas of people’s homes. Occasionally, it even seems like a dimly-lit basement, both by design and due to cinematic choices.

Creatures That Live In The Further
numerous tormented spirits dwell within the realm called The Further. These people are often trapped by their haunting pasts or final moments, or for some unexplained reason. The entities of this place make the Insidious films stand out among other ghost movies, with The Bride in Black, also known as Parker Crane, being one of the series’ most recognized specters.
Crane is significantly important in the initial two movies and stands as one of Elise’s most formidable adversaries across the series. Known as The Bride in Black, she has a heart-wrenching past that transforms her into this notorious serial killer and one of the entities bound within The Further. Nevertheless, The Bride eventually departs and journeys to either Heaven or Hell.
Many trapped entities aim to inhabit living beings, as they yearn for life’s essence. They are attracted to vitality because they hunger for it. This explains why numerous spirits frequent the Lambert home. With Dalton now traversing The Further, these entities seek to exert control over his body or any other empty vessels close by. Leaving one’s body through astral projection makes a person increasingly susceptible to possession. Nevertheless, the act of possessing someone is challenging and time-consuming.
Eventually, Elise (Lindsay Seim) and Josh’s mom, Lorraine (Jocelyn Donahue), manage to halt The Bride from controlling Josh as a child, as they have sufficient time to intervene and prevent his possession.
In addition to our world, demons reside in The Further as well. One of the primary demons from the movie “Insidious” is known as the Lipstick-Face Demon, which comes close to taking over Dalton’s body. One of the most striking scenes from the first film that remains etched in our memory for decades is the initial appearance of this creature. Unlike other franchise monsters, the Lipstick-Face Demon doesn’t seek to possess Dalton as a means of gaining another life chance. Instead, it thrives on causing pain and torment to people.
The entity aims to bring its corrupt plan beyond the realm of The Further by residing among and interacting with human beings. Certain malevolent spirits have the ability to manipulate people, as depicted in the movie “Insidious: The Last Key.” The KeyFace Demon persuaded Elise’s father, Gerald Rainier (Josh Stewart), to commit murder, and later influenced Ted Garza (Kirk Acevedo) using a similar approach. This creature thrives on hatred, deriving its power from it.
As a devoted cinephile, I can attest that the beings we encounter in The Further are primarily malevolent entities with sinister motives, but they’re not the only inhabitants of this realm. This is evident from Elise’s presence there. Moreover, it’s crucial to note that all souls destined for either Heaven or Hell must first traverse The Further.

Insidious’ Timeline With The Further
The Insidious movies depict a multilayered narrative involving the main characters’ interactions with The Further, which begins in the 1950s when Elise first appears as a child (depicted in The Last Key). Subsequent encounters take place during her childhood and adult life, but her next significant journey to The Further is portrayed in Chapter 2. In the 1980s, she meets Lorraine and rescues Josh from the Bride in Black. The third and fourth films unfold prior to the events of Insidious.
As a devoted fan, I’d like to share a timeline of events within the Insidious universe that I’ve pieced together:
As a devoted cinephile who’s got a soft spot for spine-tingling horror flicks, I can’t help but appreciate the extraordinary allure of The Further in the Insidious series. Even though it doesn’t quite fit the conventional definition of a haunted house movie, its deep-rooted lore makes it an exceptional addition to the genre.
