Insidious Writer Wants Someone to ‘Reinvent’ the Franchise Going Forward

As a seasoned film critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the Insidious franchise has been like a restless spirit that refuses to move on. Despite its limited critical acclaim and the audience’s mixed reactions, it has managed to haunt cinema screens for over a decade, raking in an impressive $730 million across five films.

For better or worse, the Insidious franchise has been haunting moviegoers for over a decade. The low-budget saga has thus far managed to generate more than $730 million across five films, more than earning back their money when you consider that they were all produced for a little over $42 million combined. Despite never garnering any real critical acclaim and being met with lukewarm responses from audiences, the series continues to chug along, but for writer , he’d love for the next entry in the franchise to go in a completely different direction.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, director Leigh Whannell, who returned the Lambert family for “Insidious: The Red Door” in 2023, expressed his hope that a new creator might emerge with a unique concept to steer the franchise forward. For more than a decade, the series has primarily revolved around the Lamberts and Lin Shaye’s character Elise Rainier, but Whannell believes it is time for a change, and we can’t help but agree.

“I think those characters have run their course. I would like to see someone reinvent that series a little bit, do something new with it. I don’t know what’s happening with it right now. We’re trying to do something with it, but you know how it goes with movies. Just when you think you’re starting with something, it’s over, and then it starts up again, and so you’ll probably know about it before I do.”

Where the Insidious Franchise is Headed Next

A common criticism leveled against the Insidious series is its overabundance of characters, resulting in numerous plot threads left unresolved. Consequently, viewers haven’t had a satisfying resolution for several elements within the franchise, despite there being five movies, one of which serves as a prequel. In 2023, prior to the release of Red Door, producer Jason Blum acknowledged this issue, stating that “the Insidious series has been tricky in that it’s introduced characters from different films who don’t reappear later.

Although the 2023 film was intended to mark the end of the primary Insidious series, it doesn’t mean we won’t encounter more Insidious stories. Despite receiving some criticism, the upcoming movie titled “Thread: An Insidious Tale,” starring and , will function as a spin-off, introducing new characters, but its connection to the main storyline is yet to be clarified. Furthermore, it was disclosed earlier this year that a sixth Insidious film is in production, which isn’t too unexpected given that Red Door surpassed the other films financially.

It’s clear that those who hope the franchise ends might want to block it out, as Sony and Blumhouse seem determined to keep milking their successful production for as long as possible. Fingers crossed that someone eventually finds a way to revitalize it, so it doesn’t just keep repeating old material.
