Is Black Myth: Wukong open world?

As a seasoned gamer who’s traversed countless open worlds and linear paths alike, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia upon hearing about Black Myth: Wukong. Having ventured through the vast landscapes of God of War, I find myself eagerly anticipating this monkey god’s journey.

Players are eagerly anticipating the arrival of Black Myth’s character Wukong, and there’s a lot of curiosity about how this game adaptation of Journey to the West will be organized. More precisely, fans want to know if it will feature an open-world environment.

While it’s not here yet, I do know the answer to that question.

Is it open world?

In Black Myth: Wukong, the gameplay isn’t entirely based on an open world, yet it offers expansive, explorable zones at specific instances throughout the game.

In essence, the game follows a sequential structure. As you progress through your adventure, you’ll encounter various sections that offer exploration, hostile enemies, both required and optional boss battles, as well as additional side activities. Upon finishing an area, you can advance to the next one, and so on.

In some instances, the open spaces vary in size, yet they do not form a continuous network. Instead, your journey will involve moving along straight routes through these areas. It appears that should you wish to retrace your steps or check on something you might have overlooked, it seems possible to go back.

Drawing significant inspiration from the rebooted God of War series, visualize a scenario reminiscent of it, yet featuring a monkey deity as the central character rather than a previously enraged human learning to find peace.
