90s actress Mamta Kulkarni, known for her role in Karan Arjun, recently caused a stir upon her return to India after 25 years. She was given a prestigious position, Mahamandleshwar, at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. Unfortunately, she had to resign from this post. Now, she’s revealing that her appointment came as a result of her committed spiritual practices or ‘tapasya’.
After several months had passed since the commotion, I found myself reflecting on my appointment as Mahamandleshwar of Kinnar Akhada for the very first time in a heartfelt discussion with ANI. In this conversation, I expressed, “The divine plan guided me to become Mahamandleshwar during that Kumbh, a sacred gathering of such significance in 140 years.” I went on to say, “God granted me the rewards of my 25-year spiritual journey, or ‘tapasya’, which is why it came to pass.
For those who may not be familiar, Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi declared that Mamta Kulkarni had been chosen as the Mahamandleshwar of Kinnar Akhada during the Maha Kumbh Mela. As soon as the news was shared, transgender spiritual leader and storyteller Jagatguru Himangi Sakhi Maa spoke out against it, pointing to Kulkarni’s past criminal activities as her reason for criticism.
On January 30, 2025, Rishi Ajay Das, founder of Kinnar Akhada, removed Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi from her role. He stated that she had strayed from the duties associated with the position she held.
Ajay claimed that Lakshmi’s agreement with Juna Akhada in 2019 was questionable because it didn’t have the necessary approval. Furthermore, he hinted criticically at Lakshmi for permitting Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni to become a part of the Akhada and assume the position of Mahamandaleshwar.
As a connoisseur of ethical living, I find myself questioning the moral ramifications of bestowing such a distinguished honor upon an individual with a criminal past, a decision that seems to undermine the deeply ingrained values of our esteemed institution.
This action sparked a debate, and subsequently, Mahant Ravindra Puri, President of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad, criticized this decision and challenged his authority to dismiss Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi from her role. Furthermore, he stated that both Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi and Mamta will retain their positions moving forward.
As tensions grew, Mamta chose to share her decision to step down from her role on social media. Simultaneously, the Kinnar Akhada took action, dismissing both Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi and Mamta Kulkarni due to escalating disagreements within the group and doubts about their spiritual qualifications.
