‘It Was Cliché’: Companion’s Director Describes The Magical Moment He Knew Sophie Thatcher Had To Star In The Mysterious New Horror Film

As a seasoned gamer who’s had my fair share of movie marathons and horror game binges, I can’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation when it comes to Sophie Thatcher‘s upcoming role in “Companion”. Having witnessed her chilling performances in “Yellowjackets” and “The Boogeyman”, I have no doubt that she’ll bring the same level of intensity to this new horror flick.

Over the past few years, Sophie Thatcher has been making a name for herself as one of the most dynamic young actors in the horror genre, consistently delivering impressive performances. She’s shone brightly not only in the star-studded cast of the critically acclaimed Showtime series “Yellowjackets”, but also in films like “The Boogeyman” (based on a Stephen King novel) and the currently playing “Heretic”. Her upcoming horror movie, titled “Companion”, is set to hit theaters in January, adding another exciting project to her resume. The tale of how she landed this role seems straight out of a classic Hollywood backstory.

The creation of “Companion” was previously talked about during a filmmaker Q&A session following its screening at Los Angeles’ Beyond Fest this month. During this discussion, moderator Jason Reitman inquired about the casting for the movie – where friends gather at a secluded lake house only to witness events spiraling into violence. Drew Hancock, the writer/director, shared that he didn’t have any particular individuals in mind for the characters as he felt this path would lead directly to dissatisfaction. He elaborated by saying:

If a performer declines your character role after you’ve written it, you may feel let down. To avoid this disappointment, I now craft vague, multi-dimensional characters that are not completely defined – like uninflated balloons. Then, you can hire an actor who will bring life and depth to these characters.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share an insightful tidbit about the making of “Hancock: Companion.” The producers, along with casting director Nancy Nayor, approached the selection of the actress for our beloved protagonist Iris with an open and receptive mind. This openness, however, also meant that they had to cast a broad net in their search for the ideal candidate.

Said Hancock,

We received approximately 300 self-recorded audition videos, featuring numerous chemistry readings with exceptional actors, some truly brilliant ones. However, it was a challenging task to balance the performance requirements for this role because the first part of the movie requires the character to portray a wilting violet, convincingly playing a meek individual. In contrast, the second half demands that she transforms into an action heroine, and we must believe in her strength and empowerment.

Then they had the opportunity to get a good look at Sophie Thatcher.

According to Drew Hancock’s account, Sophie Thatcher joined a virtual gathering about the filmmakers of “Companion”, and within moments, everyone seemed to agree that she was the ideal actress for the role of Iris. In fact, Hancock himself described it as an expected or overused scenario: cliché.

We did the chemistry read over Zoom, and it was like instantaneous. I think every single person, like it was across the board – all the producers, New Line, Warner Bros., like everybody. The second we saw, her we were like, ‘Oh yeah, we got to make this happen.’ It was cliché. She said two words and I was like, ‘Oh my God,’ like just imagining like, ‘This is not gonna work out, she’s perfect for this. It’s never gonna happen.’ And thank God it did, because I think she’s just phenomenal. She was just so fun work with.

Featuring Jack Quaid, Harvey Guillén, Megan Suri, Lukas Gage, and Rupert Friend, the chilling horror film Companion is among the first releases slated for 2025 and is scheduled to hit theaters on January 31. Don’t wait – make sure you catch it as soon as possible upon its release to steer clear of spoilers!
