As a long-time fan of the magical world of Willow, I can’t help but feel a pang of sorrow and frustration, much like the sorcerer’s apprentice himself when his creations spin out of control. The disappearance of Willow from Disney+ feels like a cruel twist of fate, akin to Madmartigan losing his lucky coin at the most inopportune moment.
One advantage thought to come with numerous studios launching their own streaming services was the assurance that we wouldn’t lose access to content due to the end of licensing agreements. Since the studio providing the movie or TV show would be in charge, there’d be no fear of content vanishing. However, services like Disney+ and Max have demonstrated that this wasn’t entirely true, and notably, ‘Willow’ disappeared from Disney’s streaming platform.
For several years now, popular streaming platforms have been losing a significant amount of content, including exclusive shows and movies that can’t be found anywhere else. A series that was abruptly taken off Disney+ is the “Willow” show, and over a year and a half later, its star Warwick Davis has expressed his disappointment in a sincere manner, labeling its removal as a “tragedy” on social media platform X (previously known as Twitter).
Initially, when “Willow” was initially removed from Disney+, its series writer Jon Kasdan presented a remarkably optimistic perspective on the move. However, more than a year later, Warwick Davis, who is involved with the show, appears to be quite critical of Disney prioritizing shareholders over viewers’ interests. It seems that Disney may have saved a significant amount of money by delaying the release of certain shows.
Approximately two years have passed since Disney+ launched the “Willow” series, a spin-off from the 1988 fantasy film starring Warwick Davis and Val Kilmer. Although the movie wasn’t initially a blockbuster, it gained cult status over time and maintained a following substantial enough that discussions about a “Willow” sequel movie persisted. Eventually, they chose to produce a follow-up series instead.
Contrary to expectations raised by the finale of Willow, which suggested more seasons, the series was abruptly canceled just a few months after its premiere. To add insult to injury, two months later, it was completely removed from Disney+, joining a long list of projects that were erased. As it was exclusively produced for Disney+, there’s no other platform where you can find or acquire the show.
Being an ardent admirer of the original film and subsequent series of “Willow,” I wholeheartedly concur with Warwick Davis. The series served as an engaging continuation of the movie, blending traditional fantasy elements with a lively rock ‘n’ roll atmosphere that added an enjoyable twist to the storyline.
Cancelation is one thing. If not enough people watch a show, it gets canceled, and them’s the breaks. But to remove it entirely so that nobody can watch it again, and nobody has a chance to discover it for the first time, is a tragedy. There’s no other word for it. Warwick Davis would like to watch the episodes again. So would I.
