As a devoted fan of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” I can hardly contain my excitement as we approach the start of Season 17! It’s fascinating to see how the lives of these talented actors have flourished beyond Paddy’s Pub, each of them venturing into new and diverse projects.
Over 16 seasons spanning 170 episodes, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” continues to be a highly anticipated series on upcoming television lineups, even with occasional longer breaks. This morally questionable and delightfully offensive show has solidified its place among the greatest TV sitcoms ever made. It’s unusual for a show to maintain its high quality for such extended periods, and season 17 is just around the corner! (Feel free to explore our rankings.)
It’s been more than a year since viewers last saw the Gang in Season 16, which was one of two consecutive seasons with only eight episodes instead of the usual ten-episode seasons from Seasons 8 to 14. We might not expect another 15-episode season like Season 3 of the FX and FXX comedy, but time spent in Paddy’s Pub is always worthwhile. Here’s what we know so far about It’s Always Sunny’s upcoming 17th season.
When Does It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia Season 17 Premiere?
Currently, there hasn’t been a definitive release date set for “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” within FXX’s prime-time programming. However, it’s anticipated that the show will air on the cable channel at some point during its 2025 premiere schedule.
If this upcoming season avoids large CGI-based stunt sequences, as it seems possible that new Lethal Weapon sequels won’t do so, then it wouldn’t be irrational to predict that Season 17 could possibly air in the fall. However, it might be overly optimistic to anticipate anything being released before September.
The Cast
The main delight of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” comes from its exceptional ensemble cast and their portrayal of eccentric characters: Charlie Day as Charlie, Danny DeVito as Frank, Glenn Howerton as Dennis, Rob McElhenney as Mac, and Kaitlin Olson as Dee. As is customary, all five main actors are anticipated to reappear in the upcoming season, unless future announcements suggest otherwise.
Absolutely, the collection of recurring characters is one reason many viewers are drawn to the series. Even though we might find it unfortunate to know individuals like David Hornsby’s Rickety Cricket, Lance Barber’s Bill Ponderosa, or Jimmi Simpson’s beloved character Liam McPoyle in real life, their appearances to assist and collude in the Gang’s most outrageous plans always remain entertaining.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m always blown away by the surprise appearances each season brings – from wrestling legend “Rowdy” Roddy Piper to Dennis Haskins from Saved by the Bell, and even Bryan Cranson and Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad! I can hardly wait for Season 17 to continue this trend. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for any announcements about guest stars!
The Season 17 Storylines
Hey there fellow gaming enthusiast! You know how some games in a series have unpredictable storylines that jump around like a hyperactive squirrel? That’s exactly what it feels like watching “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” The writers take us on wild, uncharted territory with each episode, and somehow the gang’s shenanigans start anew by the next one. It’s as if we’re playing a game where every level is fresh and different, and we never really know what crazy adventures await us in the next season!
There have been instances where the show deviated from its usual format, such as the two-part episodes, those centered around Dennis and Mac’s mentioned “Lethal Weapon” sequels, and episodes following up on arcs like The D.E.N.N.I.S. System, the Waitress, past relationships, etc. Additionally, half of Season 15 was dedicated to the Gang’s journey to Ireland.
I’m hoping that the writers continue to set the standard high for the humor in Season 17, whether they’re going for unrelated skits or a continuous storyline from start to finish.
It’s Always Sunny’s Writers Room Started Up In August 2024
On August 4, Charlie Day gave fans a big heads up on social media that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s new season was definitely on his mind, as he was celebrating the 19th anniversary of the premiere airing on FX (and making me feel old in the process). He also revealed that the writers room would be starting up within a week’s time.
Luckily, not only was the co-creator and lead actor narrating tales, but his fellow cast member of Sunny also provided evidence of the joyous creativity unfolding backstage by sharing this Instagram post.

It’s great to see Rob McElhenney including Glenn Howerton in a special way, as he took a photo with an impressive portrait of Howerton (from Blackberry) and stood between David Hornsby and Nina Pedrad. Whether Howerton will participate in the writing process later or if scheduling issues arise remains uncertain.
Filming For Season 17 Will Reportedly Start In October
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel the excitement brewing since the writers’ room for “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is set to fire up in early August. Although no official word has been given by the network or the talented minds crafting these episodes, Kaitlin Olson, one of our beloved cast members and wife to Rob McElhenney, hinted that we can expect Season 17’s filming to start as soon as October. She shared this tidbit while discussing her upcoming series, “High Potential,” with The Playlist.
Absolutely, we completed wrapping up “High Potential” in October, and approximately three days after that, we began filming “Sunny”. Since both projects are filmed on the same set, I’ll essentially be immersed in production activities come springtime.
Additionally, Olson mentioned that she might finish shooting for some time around March, but it remains uncertain whether this timeframe pertains to the wrap-up of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Season 17, or if it’s related to another production project altogether.
Each Co-Star Has Worked On Other Projects In The Meantime
As a die-hard fan of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” it might seem like the main cast members are forever tied to this iconic show, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Since we last saw them in Season 16 back in 2023, they’ve been busy with a plethora of exciting projects outside of FXX comedy. Here’s a quick rundown of what each star has been up to since then.
- Rob McElhenney: co-writing Minecraft: The Movie (2025), producing the unscripted soccer club-focused series Bienvenidos a Necaxa and the next season of Welcome to Wrexham for FX and Disney+ (2025)
- Kaitlin Olson: co-starring in HBO’s Hacks Season 3 (2024), Netflix’s comedy feature Incoming (2024), and ABC’s fall dramedy High Potential (2024)

- Glenn Howerton: co-starring in Max’s raunchy Scooby-Doo prequel Velma (Season 2 debuted in 2024) and the upcoming Netflix miniseries Sirens (2025)

Fans might want to catch up on all the content currently out there as they eagerly await the arrival of Season 17 in the future.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t wait to stay updated on the groundbreaking 17th season of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” And hey, with the NFL season kicking off, who knows? Maybe I’ll spot Charlie Day at a Philadelphia Eagles game!
