Its Whats Inside Ending, Explained: Who Ended Up in Whose Body?

As a seasoned observer of intricate plots and twisted narratives, I must say that the tale of body swaps and hidden identities in “It’s What’s Inside” is nothing short of captivating. The life experiences of these characters have been turned upside down, much like a game of Jenga with all the blocks removed!

The film titled “It’s What’s Inside” was a success at both the Sundance Film Festival and SXSW. Consequently, as reported by Deadline, Netflix paid around $17 million for the rights. However, unlike other body-swap horror movies, its complexity doesn’t stem from the characters’ individual desires; instead, it lies in the fact that eight individuals are involved in the body-swapping process.

In the movie, a group of college pals reunite eight years later on the eve of one of them, Reuben, tying the knot. To relive their old times, Reuben asks everyone else, including his fiancée, to leave, so they can party. However, an unexpected guest, Forbes, who hasn’t been seen since school, arrives with a mysterious suitcase containing a device that swaps people’s bodies. But as the night unfolds and they play this body-swapping game three times, things take a more serious turn than initially anticipated.

Round One

Harmless Fun for All!

Initially, four pairs undergo a body-swap process. Shelby, a girl trapped in an unfavorable relationship with Cyrus, exchanges identities with Brooke, a creative artist. Meanwhile, Nikki, a popular social media figure, trades places with Maya, who practices Buddhism. Cyrus, Shelby’s partner, gets swapped with Reuben, the soon-to-be-married individual. Lastly, Dennis, the wealthy heir, finds himself in Forbes’ body, as it was Forbes who introduced the body-swapping device to begin with.

In this round, everyone, including Shelby who was initially hesitant, finds joy. They appreciate not only the experience of viewing the world from another perspective but also the opportunity to connect on a deeper level due to their diverse physical forms. At the conclusion, they effortlessly return to their own bodies.

Round Two

Things Start to Get Serious

In the second round, the objective remains unchanged: It’s all about having fun! However, there are some twists in this round that set it apart. To start, Shelby finds herself inhabiting Nikki’s body. This is significant because Shelby knows that Cyrus, her boyfriend, has always had feelings for Nikki. So, from Shelby’s perspective, transforming into Nikki can be seen as a strategic move or a clever trick.

The situation here is that Reuben, who now inhabits Dennis’ physical form, has feelings for Maya, but her body is being controlled by Brooke. Since neither of them are in their own bodies, they appear unusually open with each other. This leads to a sexual encounter between the two. However, during this act, they were on the balcony railing, which gave way as they were engaged and caused both of them to fall to the ground and perish. Consequently, both Dennis’ consciousness or essence, and Maya’s physical self, along with Brooke’s consciousness or essence, are now deceased.

In the swap of bodies, Dennis found himself in Cyrus, Maya in Shelby, Cyrus in Forbes, Nikki in Brooke, and Forbes in Reuben. However, by the end of this round, it turned out that both Dennis and Maya had no bodies to return to, while Shelby opted not to revert back into Nikki’s body.

The Big Twist Is Revealed

At the end of a rather chaotic scenario resembling round three’s start, Shelby and Cyrus find themselves back in their original bodies. However, the remaining four individuals have switched bodies: Dennis is now in Forbes’ body, Forbes is in Nikki’s body, Nikki is in Reuben’s body, and Maya is in Brooke’s body. To complicate matters further, it was discovered that the person we knew as Forbes wasn’t actually Forbes. During the party, Forbes had been Beatrice, Forbes’ sister, all along. Therefore, when Forbes moved into Nikki’s body, it was actually Beatrice who made the switch. The genuine Forbes was found to be in Beatrice’s body, and it wasn’t until after Beatrice had fled with Nikki’s body that everyone else learned about this twist of events.

The explanation for why Beatrice now occupies Forbes’ physical form stems from their college days. During this time, Beatrice experienced periods of distress, and at Dennis’ birthday party in college, another episode occurred. This incident led to Beatrice being admitted to a psychiatric hospital under constant supervision due to suicide risks. Later on, Forbes, who was working on a body-swapping device with his team, decided to share it with Beatrice as a means of reconnecting and providing a boost to her spirits.

In a fascinating twist of events, Forbes and Beatrice exchanged their physical forms. Beatrice, now inhabiting Forbes’ body, made off with the body-swap machine and a suitcase, which led her to attend Reuben’s gathering looking like Forbes. Later on, she also switched bodies with Nikki. To complicate matters further, during her stay in Dennis’s body in the initial exchange, Beatrice moved his money into an offshore account for personal gain.

Regarding those who found themselves in other people’s bodies, Dennis seems rather cautious, Nikki is quite upset, and Maya is taking a peaceful perspective. Since four individuals are now out of their original bodies, three out of the four seem to be coping fairly well. Ultimately, though, it was Beatrice who manipulated everyone. She successfully escaped with the body-swap device, Dennis’s money, and Nikki’s body, leading one to conclude that if there’s a winner in this bizarre game, it might just be Beatrice – the one who had been hiding among them all along.
