As a long-time fan of both James Bond and Mads Mikkelsen’s captivating performances, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment that we might not see him don the tuxedo and take on the role of 007 himself. Yet, his suggestion of Idris Elba as the next James Bond resonates with me deeply.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my thoughts on who should be the next James Bond. It’s none other than the talented actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and star of “Luther,” who has been captivating audiences with his performances. You might recognize him as the villainous figure who ignited his career as Le Chiffre in the 2006 reboot of “Casino Royale” featuring Daniel Craig. However, it seems we share a common sentiment with many James Bond fans, as he has also expressed this preference. But there’s a catch – it’s not an easy task to convince the producers to cast him, given that the role of 007 is highly coveted and steeped in tradition.
“I think that Idris Elba was talked about for a while. I think he’s an amazing actor.”
Mikkelsen notes that Elba’s age (52) might be a problem since he and Daniel Craig are similar ages, and this could affect Elba’s chances of becoming the next James Bond, even though many fans have wanted him for the role for a while.
More recent updates on casting have suggested that the team is seeking a male actor, approaching his thirties, to take over the iconic tuxedo role following Daniel Craig’s departure in 2021’s “No Time to Die”. While Idris Elba and many Bond enthusiasts might hope for him to land the part, it seems that this wish may just stay as a captivating film fantasy.
Is Idris Elba Even Interested in Playing James Bond?
Essentially, Idris Elba is untroubled by not portraying the iconic spy character, as he has made a unique mark with his detective character John Luther. Last year, during interviews for the Netflix crime thriller Luther: The Fallen Sun, Elba himself declared that he was no longer in contention for the role.
The atmosphere is quite dim, and we’ve devoted around ten years to our television series. Our natural desire now is to bring it to the silver screen, and that’s why we’re here with the first movie. You might hear chatter about another character starting with ‘J’ and ending with ‘B,’ but I won’t be stepping into those shoes. Instead, I’ll be portraying John Luther – that’s who I am.
Right now, it’s undecided as to who will assume the role of 007. Some top contenders are Aaron Taylor-Johnson, known for playing Kraven the Hunter, Theo James from The Gentlemen, Henry Cavill, once cast as Superman, Paul Mescal from Gladiator 2, and Regé-Jean Page, star of Bridgerton.
Regarding Mads Mikkelsen, he’s set to resume his role as a villain in the upcoming Disney live-action adaptation of “The Lion King,” titled “Mufasa: The Lion King.” This movie is scheduled for release on December 20, 2024. In this film, Mikkelsen portrays Kiros, a powerful lion leader, while Aaron Pierre plays Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. plays Taka. As expected, Mikkelsen delivers an impressive performance as the movie’s antagonist. Unfortunately, despite his efforts, the live-action remake has not been able to avoid the so-called “live-action remake curse,” with “Mufasa: The Lion King” currently rated as “rotten” at 59% on Rotten Tomatoes.
