James Cameron Reveals ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Will Be Longer Than ‘The Way of Water’

Get ready to sit back and relax for a while when Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters.

In a conversation with Empire magazine, filmmaker James Cameron has shared that the forthcoming third part in his Avatar series will exceed the length of the previous installment, Avatar: The Way of Water (released in 2022), which clocked at approximately three hours and 12 minutes.

Essentially, Cameron stated that the first act of movie 2 contained an overabundance of excellent concepts. It was progressing at a rapid pace, similar to a speeding bullet train, and there wasn’t enough focus on character development. He suggested, “Let’s divide it,” meaning they should break up the film into two parts.

The director added, “Movie 3 will actually be a little bit longer than movie 2.”

On the contrary, it’s likely that Avatar won’t be bothered by the movie’s running time because the first two films have been among the largest box office hits ever. The 2009 version of Avatar currently holds the title as the highest-grossing film in history, while The Way of Water currently ranks third.

Amanda Silver, along with Cameron and Rick Jaffa, jointly penned the script for “Fire and Ash”. In an interview with Empire, she clarified that “The Way of Water” and “Fire and Ash” are standalone movies since “the characters required some room to live and grow.

She noted that these films offer much more than just fast-paced plots and stunning visuals; they feature genuine characters. Notably, Sam Worthington is expected to resume his character Jake Sully, while Zoe Saldaña will once again play Neytiri in the upcoming third installment.

Despite Cameron keeping quiet about the specifics of “Fire and Ash,” he previously expressed to The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s incredibly exciting. I think you’ll find it captivating.

When questioned about his intentions for directing the fourth and fifth movies, he responded affirmatively, saying, “Definitely. I’d have to be stopped, honestly. I’ve still got plenty of enthusiasm and enjoy what I’m doing. Why wouldn’t I continue? And let me tell you, they’re already scripted. I re-read both scripts about a month ago. They’re fantastic stories that need to be brought to life. In case of an unfortunate accident, someone else will have to step in and complete them.

The movie titled “Fire and Ash” is scheduled to premiere in theaters on December 19, 2025. The sequels of “Avatar,” namely Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are planned for release on December 21, 2029, and December 19, 2031, respectively.
