As a long-time fan who’s seen more DC Universe reboots than I care to remember, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and confusion as we approach the dawn of the new DCU under James Gunn. On one hand, it’s thrilling to see a fresh start with new interpretations of our favorite heroes like Superman, Batman, and many more. On the other hand, the idea of keeping elements from the past while trying to create something entirely new feels like trying to unravel a Gordian knot made out of Kryptonite.
The start of James Gunn’s new era at DCU is almost upon us! By the end of this year, we’ll see the premiere of the animated series, Creature Commandos. Following close behind, around next summer, is one of the most eagerly awaited releases of 2025: Superman, marking the beginning of several upcoming DC films. These films will establish a fresh, standalone DC franchise that shares connections with past movies and series.
It was assumed that the new DC Universe, titled “Gods and Monsters,” would completely overhaul both the big and small screen versions of DC, introducing fresh takes on Superman, Batman, and other characters. However, during a panel at New York Comic Con (reported by Comicbook.com), James Gunn clarified that certain aspects from the previous universe will remain canon if they are explicitly referenced as such. Here’s what Gunn added…
In our storytelling, events from the past are often referred to and recognized as official parts of the DC Universe (DCU) by being mentioned.
And now I have a headache.
Instead of completely starting anew, the revamped DCU will retain some elements from its earlier version. John Cena is slated to reappear in the second season of the hit Peacemaker series on Max. However, while the upcoming season will be part of the DCU, the previous one won’t. But if certain events from Season 1 are crucial for Season 2 and are woven into the narrative, they will be included in the DCU storyline. Those events did occur.
In addition, it’s been established that Xolo Maridueña, who portrayed the Blue Beetle in a DC film in 2023, will assume the role of Blue Beetle within the new DC Universe. However, the occurrences depicted in this film are not considered part of the canon. Consequently, when his character appears, he should be regarded as equally “novel” or “new” as Milly Alcock’s portrayal of Supergirl.
Opting for a fresh start by completely separating these franchises appears to be the best approach, as it avoids potential confusion. On the other hand, continuing the narrative within the same franchise, even with some recasting, could work. However, a blend that maintains old stories while introducing new ones for most characters might result in an overly complex or messy scenario.
Can we expect these connections to only affect characters who are continuing from previous roles, or could they potentially influence new characters as well? Is it possible that Henry Cavill’s Superman lore might factor into David Corenswet’s character background? Could the actor portraying Batman in The Brave and the Bold still share a connection with Ben Affleck’s or even Michael Keaton’s version of the character?
It appears that there might not be many connections between the old movies and shows and the new ones, but for now, it remains uncertain. Fingers crossed that it won’t get too perplexing.
