James Gunn Reveals 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Spinoffs Planned for Marvel

As a die-hard Marvel fan who’s lived through the rise and fall of James Gunn with the Guardians of the Galaxy, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia at the news of his ambitious plans for DCU’s Creature Commandos. Gunn has always been a mastermind when it comes to breathing life into unlikely heroes, and the Guardians were no exception.

The long-awaited new direction for DC Universe by James Gunn officially begins with the debut of ‘Creature Commandos’ on Max. This is the initial production by Gunn for Warner Bros., following his appointment as co-president of DC Studios, alongside Peter Safran, in October 2022. Previously, Gunn gained recognition within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he transformed the relatively unknown ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ into a widely recognized franchise. It’s intriguing to note that despite the immense popularity of Guardians of the Galaxy, Disney and Marvel have yet to produce many spin-offs centered around these characters. As per Gunn, at one point, he was working on at least three spin-offs based on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’.

In a conversation on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast with Josh Horowitz (through Discussing Film), Gunn disclosed that while he was at Marvel, he was concurrently working on several Guardians of the Galaxy spin-offs. One of these was a Ravagers series for Disney+. Additionally, Gunn shared plans for a film featuring Rocket and Groot, but this eventually became Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, he initially wanted to produce the Rocket and Groot movie first. Gunn also mentioned ongoing work on a Star-Lord project titled The Legendary Star-Lord, which was hinted at in the end-credits of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn stated that they made significant progress on a pitch for this project and may have suggested it was still a possibility when he said, “I’m excited to see what they do with Guardians. I would love to see them explore more stories with these characters. Chris [Pratt] has my blessing. They all have my blessing. Chris keeps asking, ‘Is this okay? Is this okay?’ and I’m like ‘I am completely fine with whatever you do. Go ahead and do it.’ He is one of my close friends, and I would love to see him reprise his role as Star-Lord again.

So far, there have been only two spin-offs featuring the characters from “Guardians of the Galaxy”. These are the animated series “I Am Groot” and the holiday special “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special”, which were both released on Disney+ in November 2022. They served to set the stage for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”. The film concluded with a hint that a new team, consisting of Rocket, Groot, Cosmo, Kraglin, Adam Warlock, and Phyla-Vel, might be formed. With this and the suggestion that Star-Lord would reappear, many fans are eagerly awaiting to find out if the Guardians of the Galaxy will feature in either “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Avengers: Secret Wars”.

James Gunn Had a Lot of Ideas for Guardians Spin-Offs

It’s not surprising that James Gunn had numerous concepts for spin-offs from the Guardians of the Galaxy. At a certain point, it seemed as though Gunn might be shaping Marvel’s cosmic universe extensively; however, these reports were later played down by Kevin Feige. Initially, Marvel Studios was planning to release Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May 2020, but circumstances changed when Disney dismissed Gunn following a wave of controversy over some controversial tweets he had posted years earlier. These tweets resurfaced in an organized online attack against Gunn after he criticized the Trump administration publicly. Soon after his dismissal from Disney, Warner Bros. swiftly recruited him for their DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and reworked The Suicide Squad. Although Disney and Marvel eventually rehired Gunn and released Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May 2023, by then, he had already accepted a position to jointly manage DC Studios with Peter Safran.

Discussing the possibility of a Ravagers TV series, it appears that this project may have been under consideration following James Gunn’s return to Marvel in 2019, only a few months prior to Marvel Studios revealing their initial lineup of Disney+ series such as WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and Hawkeye. Interestingly, discussions about a Rocket and Groot spin-off might have started as early as the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. While The Legendary Star-Lord series seems to still be in development, fans are left pondering if the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise maintains its appeal without James Gunn leading the charge.
