James Gunn Unveils The Engineer: A Dark Twist in DC’s Superman!

As a die-hard film enthusiast who adores the DC Universe, I’m excited to share that it’s officially time for Superman to make his grand return to the big screen, marking the commencement of the rebooted DC Universe. Director James Gunn has decided to breathe fresh life into this franchise by introducing some intriguing characters who might not be as familiar to those outside the comic book world. Alongside David Corenswet portraying Clark Kent/Superman, we can expect to see lesser-known heroes and villains like Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, Maxwell Lord, Metamorpho, and The Engineer grace our screens with their presence. In fact, The Engineer is one of the film’s most obscure characters, even within the comic book fandom. Yet, James Gunn is choosing to shine a light on this underappreciated anti-hero in his recent social media teasers for Superman.

Discussing with X, James Gunn marked the anniversary of The Engineer’s conception by posting a backstage image from the making of Superman. “Happy Anniversary to The Engineer, brought into existence by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch,” the post started. In Superman, Angela Spica, also known as The Engineer, will be portrayed by Maria Gabriela de Faria (The Exorcism of God). First introduced in The Authority #1 in 1999, The Engineer was a creation of Ellis and Hitch. Throughout her 26-year existence, Spica has had significant roles in DC Comics, with the first being in the original run of The Authority and more recently in The Wild Storm from 2017 to 2019. In both heroic and villainous roles, Spica has made a mark over the years. However, it seems that Superman will depict the character as leaning heavily towards the antagonist side.

In the photograph posted by Gunn, you can see The Engineer lying flat against the ground within a football stadium. To date, we haven’t seen much of The Engineer in promotions for Superman. In fact, her initial appearance in the first Superman trailer was such a quick and subtle wide shot that it took fans two whole days to spot it!

In this picture, Faria is dressed in a black suit like the other heroes in the movie, which stands in stark contrast to The Engineer’s powerful adaptable tech suit or nanotech body (depending on what version James Gunn chooses). Gunn added:

In the show “#Superman” this coming July, you’ll witness a captivating portrayal of [The Engineer] by a dog in human form, Gaby de Faria, who plays with chilling mastery.

Who Is The Engineer in ‘Superman?’

From my perspective, I’ve always been captivated by the intriguing figure of Angela Spica in DC Comics lore. While she may not fit the traditional mold of a hero or villain, her journey is fascinating. As a child, she harbored an unyielding passion for superheroes, which eventually led her to embrace the role of a hero herself.

However, when her body was fused with nanotechnology, it altered her moral compass subtly but significantly. Although her intentions are commendable – seeking to create a better world as a member of The Authority – her methods can sometimes be questionable, embodying the philosophy that the ends justify the means. This complex character arc makes Angela Spica a compelling figure in the DC universe.

The movie “Superman” is set to hit theaters on July 11th this year. At the tail end of 2024, a first sneak peek was unveiled, with director James Gunn gradually sharing trailers and previews for the film since then. The director has announced that the upcoming trailer for this movie is currently being produced, and it’s expected to be released within the next month or so.
