James Gunn Was Asked To Confirm If The DCU's Green Arrow Will Be 'Comic Accurate,' And His Response Got Me Chuckling

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of DC Universe immersion under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension as I gaze upon the upcoming slate of DC movies and shows. The roster is impressive, boasting familiar faces like Superman, Batman, and Green Lantern, among others. However, it’s the absence of certain heavy-hitters, such as Oliver Queen aka Green Arrow, that piques my curiosity.

Examining the lineup of forthcoming DC films and TV series, several iconic superheroes have already been confirmed to make their debut in the upcoming DC Universe, such as Superman, Batman, Supergirl, Green Lantern, Booster Gold, and Swamp Thing. However, there are a few notable characters yet to be revealed for this interconnected universe, like Oliver Queen, also known as Green Arrow. Interestingly, when asked if the Green Arrow in the DC Universe would stick closely to his comic book counterpart, DC Studios co-head James Gunn’s answer brought a smile to my face.

In a conversation on Threads, a fan expressed doubt about how closely the Green Arrow character in the DC Universe would adhere to the original comics, pointing out that Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen from Arrow seemed more like Batman than Green Arrow. Gunn responded by suggesting that the interpretation of “comic accurate” might differ and proceeded to post two comic book images depicting Green Arrow.

As a devoted fan, I couldn’t help but express my feelings when Peacemaker took a jab at the Green Arrow: “I didn’t take kindly to that remark at all!” – Stephen Amell responded, standing up for his character. He also addressed the criticism the Arrowverse has faced, stating, “I believe there’s been an excessive amount of flak thrown our way.

Charlie Hunnam Reveals Why He Turned Down The Part Of Green Arrow In Zack Snyder’s DC Universe

Originating from the Golden Age of Comics, the Emerald Archer cruised around in his rather suggestively shaped Arrowplane racer. In contrast, a comic book featuring Scooby-Doo has Green Arrow firing at the Mystery Inc. group and mentioning villains like Merlyn the Archer, Count Vertigo, and the Clock King, who is humorously ridiculed by Green Lantern. Among the countless comic book scenes James Gunn could have posted without explanation, I find it amusing that he chose these specific ones, as they illustrate how not every comic book element needs to be translated into live-action.

To clarify slightly, I’d like to express a different perspective on this matter. Although I’m not keen on introducing an Arrowplane or Arrowcar that resembles its 1940s design into the DC Universe, I am open to seeing characters like Merlyn, Vertigo, and Clock King portrayed in live-action format. It’s essential to avoid making these villains too comical, but at the same time, they should not deviate significantly from their comic book depictions, as the Arrow TV series occasionally did with Vertigo and Clock King. Striking a balance is key, and if Green Arrow becomes a significant figure in the DCU, it would be more engaging to see him confront his own villains rather than continuously face off against another hero’s adversaries.

Essentially, I concur with the sender’s viewpoint regarding Oliver Queen from Arrow, who was reminiscent of Batman in the early seasons, although this changed over time. In the DC Universe, it would be fitting to maintain Oliver Queen’s characteristic left-wing, people-oriented persona that has been a defining feature since the late 1960s, thanks to writer Dennis O’Neil and artist Neal Adams. However, instead of portraying him as a brooding vigilante, it would be more suitable to depict him in a more optimistic manner, with a political edge.

We’ll share details about who’s playing Green Arrow in the DC Universe and where his first appearance will be once that information becomes available. In the meantime, the Creature Commandos will debut the DCU starting next month for Max subscribers, and Superman is scheduled to appear on July 11, 2025, in upcoming movies.
