Jean Smart Takes a Jab at HBO Max Name Change in Emmy Acceptance Speech: ‘Just What We Needed, Another Network’

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for well-crafted narratives, I can’t help but appreciate Jean Smart‘s Emmy journey as if it were a captivating quest in my favorite role-playing game. Her character, Deborah Vance, is not just a comedic gem; it’s a testament to the power of resilience and the enduring allure of second chances.

I was thrilled to take home the Primetime Emmy for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series at the 2024 Emmys! This was my second Emmy, and I won it for my unforgettable portrayal of Deborah Vance on the Max-produced show, “Hacks.” In my heartfelt acceptance speech during the award ceremony, I couldn’t help but poke fun at the network’s name change, which they announced earlier this year.

I’m absolutely thrilled and deeply grateful, it’s truly humbling to receive this award from the legendary Candice Bergen. A plethora of people deserve my gratitude, starting with our exceptional showrunners – Jen [Statsky], Paul [W. Downs] and Lucia [Aniello]. I can never fully express my appreciation for considering me part of your vision. To Casey [Bloys] and the entire HBO Max team, thank you for your unwavering support. And oh, sorry for the joke, another network is just what we needed!” (In first person as a fan)

Smart then went on to acknowledge her longtime agent during her speech.

Tonight, I’ll be paying tribute to my agent, Scott Henderson, who has been with me for over 30 years and is now retiring. This man, who is simply amazing, supportive, cultured, tasteful, funny, kind, and loving, is leaving us, and it’s breaking my heart. He never once tried to persuade me on things I wasn’t comfortable with. Scott, I adore you and wish you nothing but the best. Cycling through France sounds better than representing me? I can’t quite comprehend that, but thank you. Thank you all,” she said, fighting back tears.

Smart has secured her sixth Emmy Award, this time for outstanding lead actress in a comedy. Over the course of her career, she’s been nominated thirteen times, making this win her sixth victory. Previously, she had won an Emmy for her performance as Vance in 2022.
