As a devoted fan of Jeff Baena‘s work, I am deeply saddened by his untimely passing at just 47 years old. His unique storytelling and quirky humor brought a breath of fresh air to the indie film scene. From “Spin Me Round,” “Horse Girl,” “The Little Hours,” “Life After Beth,” and even his work on “Cinema Toast” and “I Heart Huckabees,” Baena’s films were always a delightful surprise, full of wit and charm.
His marriage to the equally talented Aubrey Plaza last year was a testament to their shared passion for the art of filmmaking. It was a union that I had hoped would continue to produce more memorable works for us all to enjoy.
In a way, it feels like we lost not just a talented artist but also a dear friend who invited us into his peculiar and fascinating world through his films. The fact that he died by suicide is especially heartbreaking. Mental health issues are far too common in our industry, and we must do better to support each other and break the stigma around seeking help.
I can’t help but think that if Jeff Baena were here today, he would make a joke about how he “went to the great indie film festival in the sky.” His sense of humor was one of his greatest strengths, and it will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Jeff Baena. Your work will continue to inspire us for years to come. #JeffBaenaForever 💔
