At the Sunday press conference for Lynne Ramsay’s film “Die, My Love“, the actors candidly discussed how becoming parents had impacted their lives.
Directly following their performance at the Palais premier on Saturday evening, which earned them a heartfelt six-minute standing ovation, they headed to the afterparty hosted by The Hollywood Reporter at the bustling venue, Salama in Cannes.
Or, more concisely:
Following their warmly received debut performance at the Palais on Saturday, they attended an afterparty held by The Hollywood Reporter at the lively spot, Salama, in Cannes.
The movie, based on Ariana Harwicz’s 2017 novel with the same title, was shifted from France to Montana as its setting. This film, titled “X,” was jointly written and directed by Ramsay (a Scottish woman), with Lawrence taking on a significant role in co-production, marking one of her most daring ventures in recent years. In this two-hour production, Lawrence portrays Grace, a new mother who experiences postpartum depression and slips in and out of psychosis.
In the movie, Robert Pattinson takes on the role of husband to a character portrayed by Sissy Spacek, while Jackson’s parents are played by Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek. Additionally, Lakeith Stanfield, who has been nominated for an Oscar, is part of the cast.
Lawrence, who is currently a mother of two, displayed visible emotion while discussing her collaboration with Ramsay on the topic. She shared, “It was incredibly challenging to differentiate between my actions and those Grace would take… Extreme anxiety and depression can be deeply isolating. No matter where you are, you feel like an outsider, and that struck a deep chord within me. I’ve always wanted to work with Lynne Ramsay ever since I saw Ratcatcher (1999), thinking ‘There’s no way.’ But we decided to take a chance and sent our project to her. And I can hardly believe that I’m here speaking with you,” Lawrence said as they warmly embraced.
Pattinson shared about collaborating with Ramsay: “I didn’t find anything particularly challenging. Working with him was someone I had always aspired to, and on set, we established an environment that didn’t necessitate labeling things as difficult or simple. It was quite an unconventional setting. However, when you have such faith in your director… it fosters a vibe on set where you’re being guided. You may not know the specific destination, but trusting the director so much is key.
Lawrence and Pattinson discussed the impact of parenthood on their careers, with Lawrence stating, “Having kids alters everything.” He explained, “It completely transforms your life, yet it’s both harsh and amazing.
Lawrence expressed that she was unaware of the depth of emotions one could experience, as her profession often requires such sensitivity. She went on to say that her job has broadened her horizons significantly, making her feel incredibly sensitive, almost tender like a blister. She acknowledged that this new perspective has undeniably improved her life and creatively transformed her. In a humorous note, she suggested that having children is beneficial for aspiring actors.
Robert Pattinson expressed that quite surprisingly, welcoming a child brings an immense reservoir of energy and creativity following the event. Jennifer Lawrence then interjected, seeming to question, “You gain energy?
Pattinson went on to say, “A man can’t give the right response! I’m here merely to encourage… Since her birth, it has significantly influenced my professional perspective, indeed, you embody wholeness.
Ramsay expressed his thoughts on approaching Harwich’s novel: “The theme revolved around postpartum, but it was also meant to be embedded creatively within dreams, fantasies, sex, and passion. So I considered, ‘Perhaps I can attempt this.’ Then I thought, ‘I’ll give it a shot, I’m not sure if it will succeed.’ Eventually, it seemed more like a love story, which provided me with an entry point.
The main movie critic for THR (The Hollywood Reporter), David Rooney, described the film as a “striking character analysis” and at times, “quite a slog.” He went on to say: “Despite being difficult to appreciate, Ramsay’s film is captivating due to its stunning visuals which create an intense radiance that ties together this somewhat unwieldy production.”>
David Rooney, THR’s lead movie critic, referred to the film as a “compelling character examination” and at times, “a bit of a drag.” He added: “Though Ramsay’s film may be tough to adore, its visually stunning elements emit such a powerful luster that they manage to draw together this complex and somewhat cumbersome production.”>
