At the Sundance Film Festival’s red carpet events, you’ll find styles ranging from quirky to sophisticated.
Stars adorn themselves for the frosty weather in comfortable and multi-layered outfits, similar to Ayo Edebiri in The Row, Sarah Jessica Parker sporting a Meruert Tolegren dress paired with a chunky cardigan and vibrant fuchsia boots from her own line, or Chloe Sevigny donning an entire Saint Laurent ensemble that included a knit turtleneck, long velvet skirt, Diane boots, and an oversized satin bomber jacket trimmed with faux fur. Some choose to make a bold fashion statement with their coats, such as Cynthia Erivo in Stella McCartney, Bowen Yang, or Callum Turner in Louis Vuitton. Others opt for a professional appearance like Dave Franco and Alison Brie in tailored suits or Juliette Lewis in an oversized men’s style outfit.
Jennifer Lopez, however, is not like the rest.
On Sunday evening, Jennifer Lopez made a stunning entrance at the world premiere of her festival selection “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” directed by musical genius Bill Condon, at the Eccles Center Theatre. Her look was expertly designed by long-term stylists Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn (with Chris Appleton handling her hair). The gown she wore, a sheer lace number embellished with sparkling spiderweb patterns by Valdrin Sahiti, was one of the most memorable outfits seen at Sundance in recent times. She accessorized with jewelry from Hassanzadeh and carried a Tyler Ellis bag.
This approach was undeniably the pinnacle, representing a collective strategy that has transcended fleeting popularity to establish itself as a standard practice in movie promotions. (Note how Margot Robbie promotes the Barbie project and Ariana Grande along with Cynthia Erivo for Wicked’s launch.)
Nearly holding back, I wrestled with my decision. “I grappled with it,” I confessed to The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet before the screening. “Should I go casual for Sundance? Yet, I found myself thinking, I guess I just need to stay true — and be Spider Woman.
It’s understandable that Lopez is cast in these dual roles given her familiarity with the characters. In Manuel Puig’s Kiss of the Spider Woman, Lopez lands the role she has always desired by portraying two characters in the recent adaptation of this classic work. The story revolves around Valentín, a political prisoner played by Diego Luna, who shares a cell with Molina, a window dresser portrayed by Tonatiuh and serving time for public indecency. An unexpected friendship develops between them as Molina narrates the plot of his favorite Hollywood movie featuring Ingrid Luna, played by Lopez. Moreover, she takes on the enigmatic character, whose kiss carries a deadly consequence.
Lopez went on to explain that she had been holding onto this particular dress for quite a while. She noted that this was its debut appearance, adding that it was a brand new sight for everyone.
As a die-hard fan, his approval was the only endorsement that truly mattered to me. “He adored it,” I exclaimed. “That’s all I craved. His reaction, ‘Wow!’ made my day.” Indeed, I was overjoyed!
At the 2025 Sundance Film Festival premiere of “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” Jennifer Lopez reminisces about trying out for roles in “Chicago,” “Evita,” “Nine,” and various other productions.
