Jessica Jones Comic Co-Creator’s Take On Why The Netflix Show Worked So Well Makes Me Want Krysten Ritter In The MCU Even More

2024 was a bit subdued for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s big screen antics, but 2025 promises to bring it back to its glory days! This year alone, we’ve got three Marvel films on the horizon, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. What really has me pumped, though, is the comeback of Daredevil on Disney+ in a brand-new TV series. I can hardly contain my excitement as Charlie Cox steps back into the role, and if things go as hoped, it won’t be a one-off appearance. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Krysten Ritter reprises her role as Jessica Jones too, and perhaps other characters from the old Netflix Marvel series will make their way back!

Among the Marvel series on Netflix (now available with a Disney+ subscription), I found myself especially fond of the first season of Jessica Jones. I’ve been eagerly anticipating her return in the MCU, as I believe many others share this hope. In fact, Brian Michael Bendis, one of the original comic book creators of Jessica Jones, expressed his appreciation for how the character was portrayed and how it resonated with people. According to Bendis…

As a passionate fan, I’ve witnessed how skillfully the filmmakers managed to convey the profound trauma of her life, offering solace and resonance to those who have gone through similar ordeals. The response was incredible, touching us from every angle. It’s a powerful sensation when you connect with your audience in such a deep way, and it leaves you yearning for more. When I find myself involved in the creative process of others, I sense them asking crucial questions, some correct and some not. In these moments, I subtly guide them as best I can. I may not have all the answers, but the lessons we’ve learned from our journey are valuable, and they deserve careful consideration by those who follow in our footsteps, particularly in the world of comic books.

One distinctive feature setting the Netflix series apart from other Marvel Cinematic Universe productions was their focus on narratives suitable for a more mature audience. Although the most evident expression of this was through the depiction of intensified violence, as seen in Daredevil and Punisher, it extended to complex storylines like Jessica Jones’ experiences with abuse and her struggle to cope in unconventional ways.

In the final episode of Netflix’s show, it looked like Jessica Jones was contemplating moving away from New York, escaping her issues instead. However, she chose to stick around. This leaves her character in an intriguing position and could potentially serve as a strong starting point for a new Marvel series on Disney+.

Krysten Ritter hinted at not being overly enthusiastic about reprising her role as Jessica Jones in the past, but that was some time ago. More recently, Mike Colter expressed a potential interest in playing Luke Cage once more due to the passage of time potentially making his return feel fresh again. If Ritter feels similarly, it would be wonderful if we could see both actors back together.
