As a long-time NCIS enthusiast who has followed the team’s trials and tribulations through thick and thin, I must admit that the upcoming Season 22 looks like it will be one of the most turbulent yet. The departure of Jessica Knight (Katrina Law) leaves an indelible void on the DC-based team, particularly in the hearts of her former lover, Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen), and the rest of the crew who are now left to pick up the pieces.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel the tremors as my favorite DC-based team is bracing for significant changes ahead of Season 22. Team members are finding themselves pulled towards new horizons; some paths leading to physical peril, others treading emotional minefields. However, it seems that the most tumultuous shift comes from the departure of Jessica Knight, played by Katrina Law. Overwhelmed by personal and professional strife, Jessica chose to take a job opportunity across the country, leaving Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) and the rest of us fans back at square one, picking up the pieces she’s left behind.
Producer Steven D. Binder recently shared insights with TV Insider about the forthcoming season. He explained how Knight’s departure will resonate among the characters, particularly affecting Palmer. Although Knight won’t be a part of the team, her influence will still be noticeable in the new season, leading to opportunities for more interactions between them, based on their final conversation in the previous season. When asked about the future of their relationship, Binder hinted:
In the upcoming Episode 4, Her and Jimmy will continue their conversation from where it was left off in the series finale, and we’ll also see part 3 of this conversation. Meanwhile, [NCIS] is dealing with a seemingly minor issue that could escalate into a major problem, which they are trying to prevent. With only 42 minutes at their disposal, this episode unfolds almost in real-time. Additionally, Jimmy and Knight will delve deeper into understanding each other’s identities, futures, and boundaries, as the stakes are extremely high and potentially life-altering for both of them.
Palmer Isn’t The Only Team Member Impacted
Although Palmer is deeply affected by Knight’s departure due to their past relationship, it’s important to note that not everyone on the team is unaffected. Timothy McGee, for instance, is eagerly anticipating a more significant role next season, possibly even aiming for a deputy director position. Moreover, Binder hinted that we can expect answers regarding McGee’s situation rather soon in the upcoming episodes.
Many viewers have been curious as to why he hasn’t taken up this role yet. However, by the finale of the upcoming episode, this vacant spot should be filled.
Apart from teammate Wilmer Valderrama’s character Nick Torres, it’s apparent that the loss of Knight is particularly hard for him to handle. Given his history of struggling with the loss of close associates, this season promises to be challenging for him, as suggested by Binder. As he delves back into covert operations, Torres will find himself in a risky predicament involving unsavory characters who could cause him considerable trouble. With his focus so heavily on undercover work, Torres maintains minimal personal connections, implying that the emotional impact of losing someone is negligible for him.
