The JO-HS Gallery in Mexico City is set to unveil an intimately scaled exhibition showcasing the powerful artworks by Jo Dennis. Named ‘A Glass of Absinthe,’ this presentation adopts a materialistic perspective, curating a rich assortment of abstract and gestural pieces that revolve around the theme “something that is already missing or has been lost.
From hastily drawn sketches using marble dust and graffiti spray paint on military tents to sleek designs gracefully hanging on clothing racks, infused with an industrial aesthetic, the artist’s influence is profound and captures a myriad of human emotions. In essence, these pieces embody a transient and experimental quality, making Dennis’s artworks akin to a diary that mirrors the intricate dance between physical actions and emotional responses that define our existential journey, as the gallery explains in their statement.
During the exhibit, Dennis strengthens her theme using the texture and materials of her pieces which showcase common items, encouraging contemplation on human narratives. The gallery described her work as “deeply sensual and extremely evocative,” saying that her thick, tactile meditations eventually embody actual life experiences, embodying a concept of materiality that extends beyond its immediate physical presence to encompass all the experiential, emotional, and cultural meanings hidden within the artwork.
Jo Dennis’ ‘A Glass of Absinthe’ exhibition will run from February 4th until March 29th, and you can find it at the location provided below.
