‘Joker’ Surprise: Quentin Tarantino Gives ‘Folie à Deux’ Two Thumbs Up

As a seasoned gamer of movies and life, I can confidently say that Quentin Tarantino‘s praise for Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux is nothing short of intriguing. Being a connoisseur of cinema with a shelf stacked high with films that didn’t quite ‘work as movies,’ I find myself drawn to the unconventional and the audacious.

Quentin Tarantino, who was initially planning to make “The Movie Critic” as his 10th and final film, has shown his seal of approval for Todd Phillips’ antihero musical “Joker: Folie à Deux” during a podcast interview, establishing himself as a prominent figure in Hollywood.

Tarantino shared with The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast on Tuesday that he truly enjoyed the film, immensely so. He went into watching it expecting to be captivated by the cinematic techniques, but he felt it was more of an intellectual challenge than a movie that would resonate emotionally. However, he acknowledged that despite not working as a movie in his opinion, he could still appreciate its unique qualities.

Despite receiving a poor D Cinemascore upon its October release and subsequently flopping at the box office, causing significant financial losses for Warner Bros, Quentin Tarantino seems to disagree with the critical consensus on the Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga-led film.

Additionally, I have a touch of nihilism that makes me appreciate films with certain flaws. In essence, I’m drawn to movies that seem somewhat disorganized or chaotic. To others, this might appear as a jumbled mess to some extent. Contrary to many, it wasn’t an intellectual experience for me. Instead, I became fully immersed in it. The musical segments particularly captivated me, and I found myself completely engrossed. I even admired the simpler songs more, feeling they were more effective.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but admire director Phillips for his rebellious spirit in Tinseltown. “He’s flipping the bird to them all,” I’d say. He’s defying expectations for moviegoers, challenging Hollywood norms, mocking those who invest in DC and Warner Brothers, and quite frankly, anyone who expects conventional storytelling. To me, Todd Phillips is none other than the Joker himself. After all, isn’t a Joker film exactly what it is? He’s the Joker, undeniably.

Quentin Tarantino’s assessment of “Joker: Folie à Deux” contradicts the negative buzz that preceded the film’s box office launch in Hollywood. This was after Phillips’ controversial, R-rated sequel had its global debut at the Venice Film Festival.
