Kaitlyn Dever Almost Played Ellie

Over time, movies derived from video games have proven challenging to produce effectively. Although some have thrived at the box office, it’s worth noting that game franchises have achieved comparable or even greater success in the television realm recently, thanks to series such as Fallout and The Last of Us. Interestingly, the highly successful HBO show initially started off as a movie project before transitioning into a series. Kaitlyn Dever, who will portray Abby in the upcoming season set for release in 2025, was once being considered for Ellie in the original film concept.

Nevertheless, those plans were set aside, and everyone shifted their focus, but the actress picked up some major surprises about the second installment during the initial stages, which left me stunned.

Initially planned as a movie, “The Last of Us” eventually transformed into a successful TV series. Interestingly, Kaitlyn Dever had initially been linked to the role of Ellie, the female protagonist portrayed by Bella Ramsey in the show. During the mid-2010s, Dever even visited Naughty Dog Studios for discussions with studio head Neil Druckmann about the character, as the second game was being developed. The actress shared…

As I stepped into the creative haven of Naughty Dog, I found myself face-to-face with none other than Neil himself. He graciously guided me through their innovative workspaces, revealing the intricate process behind the creation of their groundbreaking game. Incredibly, they were already deep into the development of the sequel during my visit.

As a movie aficionado eagerly anticipating the release of “The Last of Us Part II” in 2020, I was granted an exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming game sequel. To my surprise, I wasn’t privy to Abby’s character name yet – the role I’ll be bringing to life in “The Last of Us” Season 2. Nevertheless, I did catch a glimpse of Ellie’s evolution over time, and was privy to intriguing plot details that remain tightly under wraps. The suspense continues…

I had a glimpse at the early sketches of an older Ellie, and he indeed shared with me the events that unfolded. As for spoiler warnings… He inquired, “Would you prefer to know what happens?” To which I eagerly responded, “Sure, go ahead!” So, I’ve been safeguarding that revelation for all these years.

Information about games like this is usually kept under wraps, but it’s noteworthy that Dever was privy to the story’s details, suggesting a strong bond between her and Druckmann. If the movie had succeeded, a sequel based on the second game would likely have been planned, so the studio head might have just been looking ahead.

If you haven’t watched “The Last of Us” yet and are eager to follow the story, Max offers all episodes from Season 1, plus fresh releases starting April 13 with Season 2. In a twist of fortune similar to many others, my movie project might have ended up lingering in development limbo, never seeing the light of day. Yet, fortunately, my collaboration with Naughty Dog persisted. I was given the opportunity to bring Cassie Drake to life through my voice acting in “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End,” a franchise that would eventually secure a movie adaptation, featuring Tom Holland as its lead.

In the revival of “The Last of Us” as a show accessible with Max subscription, Kaitlyn Dever was not overlooked. She will portray Abby, who can be considered the antagonist (in a sense) from the second game. Now, she’s set to appear on screen in the adaptation, playing a character significantly different than before.
