As a long-time fan and follower of Kanye West‘s career, I must admit that it’s become quite a spectacle watching his legal battles unfold. It seems like every time I turn on the news or open my browser, there’s another lawsuit against him. This latest one involving Benjamin Deshon Provo is particularly concerning, as it alleges racial discrimination and unfair practices at West’s private school Donda Academy.
It seems Kanye West was expected to attend a court deposition in Los Angeles, but that didn’t occur because, according to reports, he was instead in Japan with his wife Bianca Censori, which placed him over 5,000 miles from where he was meant to be.
Last month, West was expected to provide sworn testimony, as stated by The U.S. Sun. Unfortunately, this did not occur because West was on a different continent at the time. According to court records obtained by the outlet, this information was documented.
Kanye West, the defendant, didn’t show up for his scheduled deposition on October 28, 2024 without notification. It’s essential that our legal team gets this testimony promptly to gather all necessary details regarding this case, enabling us to vigorously pursue our allegations and prepare adequately for trial.
In the current situation, it’s Benjamin Deshon Provo who’s taking legal action against the rapper. Notably, he used to work at Yeezy’s private school, Donda Academy, and it’s worth mentioning that this isn’t the first lawsuit connected to him and his educational institution.
He’s suing West for racial discrimination and unfair practices. The outlet noted that Provo, who “wore” dreadlocks “as a devout follower of the Muslim faith,” alleged that he was “berated and fired for refusing to cut his dreadlocks.” He also alleged that his former boss “demanded” that others also shave their heads at the school.
Additionally, the lawsuit filed by Provo asserts that Black employees were subjected to unfair treatment compared to their white peers. More precisely, the lawsuit accuses that these Black employees were given less advantageous treatment.
Particularly, Kanye often shouted and criticized harshly at black colleagues, but he rarely ever changed the tone of his voice when addressing white staff members.
In a new development, West, who failed to appear for the hearing, asserts that his actions were justified. Furthermore, it’s reported that he is trying to have this specific case thrown out of court.
A court hearing has been scheduled for February 11 in Los Angeles. Team Provo is seeking an order that compels Kanye West to attend a deposition, and they’re also requesting another order for penalties. According to the documents, this is their stance.
In addition, Provo intends to request a ruling that imposes fines on the Defendants, totaling $1,760, as reimbursement for the time and costs Provo incurred during this court case.
Prior to these events, reports stated that Provo had issued a formal notice to Ye (formerly known as Kanye) on October 14. This notice was also sent to his alleged legal representative and Yeezy Headquarters, which are currently undergoing construction.
The report continues by detailing that attorney Brian Brumfield is no longer representing Kanye West, following his dismissal. Previously, Manoj Shah had requested an extension regarding discovery issues. Yet, the document states neither Brumfield nor Shah have “presented themselves as representatives” for the defendant and have failed to respond to the discovery issue. Moreover, it’s been made known that Kanye West is currently without representation in several other civil cases.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that other ex-employees of Donda Academy, such as Cecilia Hailey among others, have joined the lawsuit against West, alleging they were unfairly dismissed.
Beyond the present controversy, the rapper is additionally embroiled in a sexual assault lawsuit filed by a former Yeezy employee. His representatives have dismissed it as an unfounded claim, stating they will retaliate with a suit of their own. Earlier this year, he was implicated in a battery case and is also dealing with multiple other legal disputes.
Reflecting on Provo’s case, I can’t predict how Kanye West will react to these developments and his upcoming travels. But mark my words, a trial date has been set for 2025 concerning everything that’s happening. Rest assured, we’ll keep you updated as more details unfold.
