As a seasoned gamer and art enthusiast who’s been around the block a few times (metaphorically speaking, of course), I can’t help but feel a thrill at the prospect of KAWS‘ 11th stop on his global tour. With a life that’s been peppered with virtual realities, pixelated worlds, and digital art, this is one instance where the physical and digital collide in a breathtaking dance of creativity.
KAWS is set for the 11th city visit on his worldwide “KAWS:HOLIDAY” tour, a collaboration with creative studio AllRightsReserved based in Hong Kong. The American artist from Brooklyn shared previews on Instagram of one of his giant COMPANION sculptures reclining at night, with a radiant moon resting in its lap.
Among his numerous collaborative projects, some noteworthy examples are designing cereal box art and partnering with General Mills, as well as creating skins for Fortnite. However, KAWS’ collaboration with AllRightsReserved stands out as the most significant. This partnership is marked by a continuous stream of sculptural releases and grand installations that travel globally under the brand name HOLIDAY.
The inaugural “KAWS:HOLIDAY” exhibition debuted at Seokchon Lake, Seoul back in 2018, and since then, it’s traveled to various locations including Hong Kong, Mt. Fuji, Taipei, Changbai Mountain, China, Singapore, Melbourne, London, and even a virtual space where the crossbones character was sent into orbit. Each installation features unique variations, and the upcoming 11th stop will be revealed at 11pm ET on August 15.
