Kevin Costner Boards Surf Thriller Film ‘Headhunters’ as Star and Co-Writer

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for movies and a soft spot for Kevin Costner, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of Costner’s latest project, “Headhunters.” Having spent countless hours immersed in the virtual worlds of Yellowstone and Horizon: An American Saga, it’s intriguing to see Costner step out of his comfort zone and into a realm that combines surf culture with horror.

Kevin Costner is catching a wave toward his next film.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share the news that the Academy Award-winning artist, who has been deeply immersed in his ambitious Horizon: An American Saga series, is joining forces with Scott Steindorff and Stone Village Films for an exciting new project titled Headhunters. In this next chapter of his creative journey, Kevin Costner will be donning multiple hats, serving as actor, producer, and co-screenwriter, fully embracing the challenges that lie ahead in this intriguing production.

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that Steven Holleran, an accomplished cinematographer, is stepping into the director’s chair for his first feature film. This project is his brainchild, and he joined forces with Kevin Costner to craft the script. This story will transport the esteemed actor far beyond the prairies, ranches, and open landscapes that have dominated his recent roles on shows like Yellowstone and Horizon.

The movie, titled Headhunters, blends the thrilling vibe of surf culture with the tension of horror, portraying Costner as Lazer, a former American expatriate living in Bali, Indonesia who’s seen better days and has a secretive background. Gathering a team of surfers headed by Bima, a local photographer, Lazer embarks on an expedition to an unexplored island in search of the ultimate wave. However, they stumble upon a tribe of ancient headhunters fiercely protecting their land. The story then unfolds into a harrowing tale of survival on a once idyllic tropical island that turns out to be more akin to hell than paradise, as suggested by the official synopsis.

The movie titled “Headhunters” is currently being prepared for filming in Hawaii, slated to begin in November. It seems that various production studios and streaming platforms are competing for the distribution rights at the moment. Casting is ongoing, with one role already filled. Daniel Zovatto, a rising talent known for his standout performances in “Station Eleven”, “The Pope’s Exorcist” and “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels”, has joined the cast and will share screen time with Costner. This decision reunites Zovatto with Steindorff, who was an executive producer on the critically praised HBO limited series “Station Eleven”, and describes him as one of the most promising young actors in Hollywood.

In truth, the film Headhunters boasts numerous get-togethers for longtime friends and work partners. As Steindorff stated, collaborating with friend Costner on this project has been a decades-long pursuit. He described the script as one of the finest he’s encountered in his career. Kevin, a renowned actor, infuses his characters with immense depth and charm, and together with Steve, he’s penned an unforgettable horror story.

As a gamer, I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with Steve Holleran in my role as director of photography on some exciting projects. We’ve worked together on Netflix’s ‘Firechasers’ and an upcoming documentary titled ‘In Search of Love’. He’s truly a visionary, the one who came up with the concept for ‘Headhunters’. Working with him is always an enriching experience, and I can’t wait to team up with him again this fall on ‘Headhunters’. Steve’s creativity is unmatched, and his unique ideas are simply captivating.

Holleran expresses his joy as “a privilege and long-cherished wish” to write the film alongside Costner and work with Steindorff and Stone Village Films. He reflects that his cinematic journey began in the sea while shooting surf videos in California during his teenage years. Now, after two decades, the movie titled “Headhunters” ties everything together, merging three lifelong interests of his: surfing, filmmaking, and thrilling adventures.

Their team is rounded out by cinematographer Ericson Core (Point Break, The Fast and the Furious), production design by Derek Hill (Ozark, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl) and costume design by Lisa Lovaas (Black Widow, The Amazing Spiderman 2). In addition to Costner and Steindorff, the film is being produced by Costner’s partner at Territory Pictures Howard Kaplan, and Stone Village’s Dylan Russell, Lindsay Davis and Stacey Woods. Eric Hays is on board as physical producer.

Steindorff has recently executive produced “Station Eleven” and his latest production, “Understanding Autism,” is currently streaming on PBS. Costner, represented by WME, has recently executive produced and starred in the critically acclaimed “Yellowstone,” for which he won a Golden Globe. Zovatto, who will soon appear alongside Anna Kendrick in her directorial debut “Woman of the Hour,” is represented by CAA and Lena Roklin at Luber Roklin Entertainment.
