Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Gets Max Streaming Date

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in Western-themed games, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation towards Kevin Costner’s period Western, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1”. Having grown up watching Costner’s iconic performances in films like “Dances with Wolves” and “Open Range”, I’ve always admired his dedication to the genre.

Kevin Costner‘s period Western Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 has a streaming date.

The first chapter in the former Yellowstone star’s film saga will release on Max on Aug. 23.

Due to the underperformance of the movie Chapter 1, which lasted for three hours and one minute, earning only $11 million during its June 28-30 premiere at the box office – Costner’s Territory Pictures and distribution partner New Line Cinema decided to postpone the release of Horizon: Chapter 2. This decision was made to enable audiences to explore the first installment on PVOD (Premium Video On Demand) and Max, instead of having it hit theaters on Aug. 16 as originally planned.

In Chapter 1, the premiere occurred on Premium VOD on July 16, even though it was still playing in cinemas. However, at that point, no Max release date had been set. This shift in strategy – initially part of an ambitious rollout plan – aimed to extend the audience base, considering the first movie carries a hefty $100 million production cost.

“The reaction from the audience towards ‘Horizon’ and their eagerness to explore more in ‘Horizon 2’, has been heartening. Kevin created this film for movie enthusiasts, offering them a captivating journey. The backing we’ve received from cinema lovers, along with theater owners, as they delve into the initial installment of this series, strengthens our faith in both them and our films. We are grateful for their participation in this adventure. We are excited about the prospect of extending that window, as it will undoubtedly elevate the viewing experience of ‘Horizon 2’.” – said Territory Pictures in a statement, expressing their anticipation.

In the interview for THR’s Awards Chatter podcast, Costner, who was earning $1.3 million per episode on Yellowstone, decided to step away from the series to dedicate his time and resources to his pet project, the multi-part production titled Horizon. To finance this passion project, he deferred his fees, mortgaged his Santa Barbara waterfront property, and personally invested a substantial amount, estimated at around $38 million, though he later mentioned it exceeded fifty million dollars.

As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that New Line and Warners have teamed up to distribute and promote the first two movies. In a unique arrangement, Kevin Costner is contributing to the marketing efforts for these films. The plan is for him to produce four films in total. Originally, his team announced that they aimed to start filming Chapter 3 in August, but as of now, that hasn’t materialized. Interestingly, Chapter 2 had a production budget of around $100 million.

Following in the footsteps of Warner Bros. Pictures’ classic Westerns, “Horizon: An American Saga” delves into the captivating allure of the Old West and its historical conquest and decline. Over four tumultuous years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s epic cinematic journey will transport viewers on an emotionally charged tour through a nation divided, seen through the perspectives of families, friends, and adversaries as they grapple with understanding what it truly represents to be the United States of America.

In addition to Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, and Giovanni Ribisi, the main cast features Abbey Lee, Will Patton, Jena Malone, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Jeff Fahey, Isabelle Fuhrman, Ella Hunt, David O’Hara, Owen Crow Shoe, Tatanka Means, Tim Guinee, Scott Haze, Tom Payne, Alejandro Edda, James Russo, Jon Beavers, Jaime Campbell Bower, Michael Anganaro, and other notable actors.

The TV show “Horizon” is created by Kevin Costner, along with Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard. Danny Peykoff, Robert Scannell, Armyan Bernstein, Charlie Lyons, Barry Berg, and Rod Lake serve as executive producers. Baird and Costner penned the screenplay, while Baird, Costner, and Kasdan crafted the story.
