As a longtime gamer and avid fan of both comedy and sports, I can’t help but share my thoughts on the recent exchange between Kevin Hart and Tom Brady regarding the NFL legend’s appearance on The Roast of Tom Brady Netflix special.
After Kevin Hart’s roast on Netflix, Tom Brady’s remarks caught Hart’s attention. Hart thinks Brady could have established some limits beforehand to avoid potential awkwardness.
In a recent interview with Taylor Rooks of Bleacher Report, published on YouTube on Thursday, Hart discussed Brady’s comments made after the event on an ESPN podcast. At the May 5 Roast of Tom Brady Netflix special, Hart and other comedians poked fun at Brady and each other with jokes that occasionally crossed the line. Brady expressed regret over his participation in the roast, stating that he wouldn’t have attended if he had known how it would affect his children at the time.
“When he expresses regret, I believe he’s implying he could have approached the situation differently, perhaps discussing limitations with his team beforehand. Instead, he chose to throw himself completely into it, likely fueled by his confidence as Tom Brady, who has always been in the limelight.”
Hart and other comedians such as Nikki Glaser and Tony Hinchcliffe, along with popular figures like Will Ferrell and Kim Kardashian, joined forces to tease Brady mercilessly or make him feel uneasy during the event. The actor-comedian acknowledged that Brady contributed positively to comedy in general but admitted to Bleacher Report that he might have faced some harsh words after it was all over.
In Hart’s opinion, the past actions in comedy and our current cultural climate of sensitivity were important and beneficial. He acknowledged that he could understand why the other person took issue with it, as they prioritized family values and conversations. Hart admitted that he wasn’t privy to any post-incident details, so his response was likely a result of that experience.
In an interview, Hart mentioned that, as the show’s host, it was his responsibility to make viewers feel comfortable and welcome from the start – a feat that managed to place the program on the weekly streaming charts, even though it had been available for just a fraction of that timeframe.
He explained, “When you closely examine my roast performance, I tackled making uncomfortable situations more bearable for everyone involved. I initiated the discomfort first – with the audience, the stage, and the people. Yet, we managed to keep things likable, enjoyable, and without appearing malicious.”
And what about another go-around roasting an athlete?
Hart expressed his willingness to repeat the action, but he required a suitable partner who was open to understanding the current situation.
