Approximately three years following the conclusion of Daredevil on Netflix, Vincent D’Onofrio once again took up the role of Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, for the series Hawkeye. Coincidentally, this appeared in the same month that Charlie Cox made a brief appearance as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home. D’Onofrio then reappeared as his Marvel character in Echo, and now we are just weeks away from him donning Fisk’s costume again for March’s Daredevil: Born Again. As the series’ premiere on the 2025 TV schedule draws near, the actor has revealed a significant change in how Kingpin will be portrayed this time around compared to his appearance in Hawkeye, and it seems quite logical.
In late 2021, Kingpin made an appearance on Hawkeye, exhibiting far greater strength and durability than depicted in Daredevil. This fueled speculation about whether this version of Wilson Fisk was the same one viewers had seen for three seasons on Netflix. However, it’s now clear that the Netflix-era Marvel shows are part of the main MCU timeline, not an alternative universe. Kingpin’s extraordinary abilities in Hawkeye might not be carried over to future Marvel TV series, as Vincent D’Onofrio hinted (through ComicBookMovie) that we shouldn’t anticipate such superhuman portrayals in the upcoming shows.
The versions of Kingpin (Fisk) in these new shows deviated somewhat from the original character portrayal. My role is to maintain the storyline consistency. Hawkeye and the original show were quite different, as was the approach to Fisk’s character – which I found excellent – but it wasn’t a direct continuation of the original. With Echo, they emphasized grittiness, but with Fisk, we didn’t quite get that original feel. Now, however, we have the opportunity to present Fisk as we always intended.
More On Daredevil: Born Again

I had concerns that the gritty edge of “Daredevil” might be diluted on Disney+. However, my apprehensions eased when I heard some comments about violence from the Executive Producer of “Born Again”.
Or in a more conversational tone:
Initially, I thought Daredevil’s edge might get softened on Disney+. But then, I heard some intriguing thoughts about violence from the EP of “Born Again”, and that put my mind at ease.
Previously in Daredevil: Born Again, Charlie Cox candidly discusses the initial difficulties with the show’s progression. He explains that the series wasn’t quite hitting its stride before significant adjustments were implemented.
In the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again”, Wilson Fisk will undoubtedly maintain his imposing physical presence. During a later part of the interview, Vincent D’Onofrio mentioned that the team behind “Born Again” has some new elements planned for this season that require Fisk’s size to be more precise and detailed. However, it’s important to note that while Fisk will still be formidable, we probably won’t see him effortlessly tearing off car doors or shrugging off injuries like being impaled with an arrow or deflecting explosions. Instead, the series is aiming for a more realistic and grounded tone when it comes to portraying Kingpin.
In other words, it appears that “Daredevil: Born Again” is making an effort to be self-contained and enjoyable within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), even without directly referencing Daredevil’s romantic relationship with She-Hulk. Fans who have watched the original Daredevil series will likely find more satisfaction in “Born Again,” so it might be a good idea to catch up on that series using your Disney+ subscription if you haven’t already. Some familiar faces returning in “Born Again” include Elden Henson, Deborah Ann Woll, Jon Bernthal, Tamara Tunie, and Wilson Bethel, while new additions to the cast include Margarita Levieva, Zebryna Guevara, Nikki M. James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, and Michael Gandolfini.
I’m fine with Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin not being as powerful in “Hawkeye” compared to how he will be portrayed in “Daredevil: Born Again,” since I’m more intrigued by his political machinations as the mayor of New York City. Additionally, if I desire to see a bulky Kingpin on screen, I can simply rewatch “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
